About the role:

As a Staff Software Engineer within our Retail domain, you’ll combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership, shaping solutions that serve millions of customers across Europe. You may bring your strongest expertise from either frontend or backend engineering – or both – while the team’s current and upcoming work has a strong frontend focus, giving you the opportunity to influence how our customer-facing experiences evolve at scale.

About the tech stack:

React.js, Next.js, Java, ES6, ESI, Varnish, Docker, Google Cloud, Kubernetes.

While this is a remote position based in Germany, it may require occasional on-site collaboration at our offices in Berlin or Cologne, depending on business and team requirements.

Job Description

About your tasks:

• Shape technical direction: Take technical ownership within the Retail domain, guiding architectural decisions around scalability, performance and maintainability and turning complex challenges into pragmatic solutions.

• Build and evolve customer experiences: Stay hands-on and shape solutions from early discovery and technical design through implementation, rollout and production, with a strong current focus on our frontend and customer-facing experiences.

• Raise engineering standards: Help evolve our engineering practices, shared components and architectural patterns, creating solutions that enable teams to build consistent, reusable and high-quality experiences at scale.

• Lead through influence: Mentor engineers through pairing, code reviews, design discussions and technical feedback, creating alignment around technical decisions and helping raise the engineering level across the Retail domain.

• Connect technology and product: Partner closely with Product Owners, UX and engineering colleagues to explore opportunities, identify risks early and balance technical trade-offs, customer value and long-term sustainability.

Qualifications

About you:

• You bring deep software engineering expertise, with a strong background in frontend or backend engineering – or across both. You’re comfortable applying that depth to broader architectural and technical challenges, while being open to working in a domain with a strong current frontend focus.

• You have operated at Staff/Principal level or demonstrated equivalent technical leadership, with strong architecture and system design capabilities and the confidence to take ownership of complex technical decisions with a high degree of autonomy.

• You have a strong track record of mentoring engineers and leading through influence, creating alignment without relying on formal authority and helping teams continuously improve their engineering practices.

• You combine strong product thinking with engineering depth: you can work effectively with Product and UX, evaluate trade-offs, validate ideas pragmatically and know when a solution needs to scale versus when the priority is learning quickly.
