Job description

Consequential Work. Dedicated People.

About Onebrief

Onebrief builds collaboration and AI-powered workflow software for military planning and operational coordination.

Military planning is complex by nature, requiring teams to coordinate information, people, and decisions across systems and locations. Onebrief brings planning, collaboration, simulation, and AI into one connected environment, helping teams test strategies, adapt to changing conditions, and make decisions with greater clarity when the stakes are real.

We are a distributed team of builders from military, operational, and technology backgrounds who care deeply about improving how important work gets done. Some team members work remotely, while others work directly alongside customers in operational environments around the world.

Founded in 2019, Onebrief is backed by leading investors including General Catalyst, Battery Ventures, Insight Partners, Sapphire Ventures, and Human Capital. Valued at more than $2 billion, we continue to invest in product innovation, AI capabilities, and team growth.

WHY THIS ROLE EXISTS

As a Staff Simulation Data Modeler at Onebrief, you own the ground truth that AtomEngine's entire simulation stands on.

AtomEngine is our proprietary, cloud-based game engine that makes the world playable to solve real-world military problems — and every scenario it runs is only as credible as the entities inside it. You'll build and defend that credibility: directing AI agents to research and construct entities at scale, codifying the standards and formulas that make and keep the catalog accurate, and stress-testing your own assumptions in competitive wargames before a customer ever finds the gap.

As a Simulation Data Modeler you own the AtomEngine entity catalog end to end — not just the entities themselves, but the sources, the standards, parametric formulas, tooling, and test coverage that make them credible. You'll direct AI agents to do the bulk of first-pass research, data entry, and testing at scale, while you focus on the judgment calls: what "right" looks like, where the catalog is weakest, and how to prove it's correct. You'll partner closely with Customer Relations to prioritize what gets built next, with Engineering to automate testing, and with other Content Creators in competitive wargames designed to break your own assumptions before a customer does.

Key Responsibilities

Catalog strategy & prioritization

  • Lead catalog strategy across multiple catalog segments. Build and maintain a structured catalog of all entities to be created across all service branches, nations, and eras — tracking completion, freshness, and data confidence for each segment.

  • Partner with Customer Relations to translate customer and field feedback into a prioritized roadmap for which catalog segments matter most right now.

Standards & tradecraft

  • Research the sources and codify the governing principles that any agent (human or AI) must follow when building entities.

  • Research and adopt or develop defensible formulas for weapon effects, sensor effects, fuel burn, survivability, and other performance models; make calls on when to adapt existing precedent versus build an original model from scratch; defend those models directly to customers and SMEs. Partner with Engineering on implementation.

  • Create & maintain a trusted network of subject matter experts you can pull in to ground the toughest modeling calls in real-world judgment.

Agent-directed production

  • Use modern agentic AI workflows as your primary force multiplier: design prompts, review loops, and guardrails that other analysts and their agents adopt to handle first-draft research, data entry, and documentation at scale, while you supervise for accuracy and catch what they miss.

  • Envision and define requirements for tools that accelerate the team’s workflow further, and partner with Engineering to help build them.

Verification, validation & accreditation (VV&A)

  • Lead the ongoing VV&A across multiple catalog segments: is it accurate, is it tested, and can you prove it.

  • Direct which automated test batteries get built and why, partnering with Engineering to design and implement automated tests that run continuously against the content catalog, catching regressions and inconsistencies before they reach customers.

  • Organize and run competitive wargames against other Simulation Content Creators and Customer Relations to stress-test your own entities and assumptions, using the results to validate or correct parametric data.

  • Continually interrogate the catalog and drive its ongoing improvement.

Knowledge & documentation

  • Lead documentation standards across the team, and author internal and external-facing knowledge articles that defensibly explain the model's logic and sourcing to “show your work” so customers and internal teams trust the numbers.

  • Train and mentor other analysts on the tradecraft, rubrics, and VV&A methods you've established.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the judgment to make sound assumptions when source data is incomplete or conflicted.

  • Demonstrated ability to direct AI agents productively, writing clear instructions, structuring review checkpoints, and catching agent errors, rather than doing all research and data entry by hand.

  • Comfort with quantitative modeling: you can reason about and sanity-check formulas for things like weapon effects, fuel consumption, or survivability, even if you're not writing production code yourself.

  • Strong organizational skills: you can build and maintain a catalog/tracking system spanning hundreds of items without losing the thread on what's fresh, what's stale, and what's next.

  • Concise, effective written and verbal communication — you'll be authoring standards documents and knowledge articles that other people and agents must be able to follow exactly.

  • A wargamer's mindset: you care whether the simulation is right, not just whether it runs.

  • Comfortable serving as the escalation point for contested technical calls, and defending those calls directly to customers or subject matter experts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with game modding tools, editors, or simulation authoring environments (hobbyist or professional).

  • Experience partnering with engineering on test automation or QA tooling.

  • Familiarity with military doctrine, force structure, or platform performance data.

  • Experience with version control and bug-tracking systems.

  • Experience mentoring, training, or setting technical standards adopted by other analysts or contributors.

Note that this role will evolve as modern workflows continue to.
