About the role

The Risk, Control of Work & Contractor Management Advisor is the technical safety lead responsible for helping bp South Africa manage operational risk and ensure high-risk activities are carried out safely and compliantly across terminals, depots and retail operations. In this role, you will provide subject matter expertise on risk management, Control of Work and contractor safety, translating complex safety requirements and legislation into practical solutions that protect people, operations and the business.

What you will deliver

  • Lead and facilitate risk assessments, including HAZOP, LOPA, QRA and other risk management activities to identify and reduce operational risk.
  • Provide technical leadership for Control of Work activities, including Permit to Work, energy isolation, SIMOPS and other high-risk work processes.
  • Drive contractor safety and governance activities, supporting contractor selection, performance management, audits and assurance programmes.
  • Maintain risk registers and support the closure of risk reduction actions to improve operational safety performance.
  • Conduct field assurance activities, operational reviews and audits to verify compliance with safety requirements and agreed controls.
  • Support incident investigations, learning reviews and the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Prepare risk, contractor management and Control of Work insights for leadership and assurance forums.

What you will need to be successful

  • An engineering degree.
  • Proven experience in engineering, operations, process safety, risk management or Control of Work within a high-hazard operating environment.
  • Experience facilitating technical risk assessments and translating findings into practical risk reduction and improvement actions.
  • Strong knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, Permit to Work, energy isolation and operational risk management practices.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, facilitation, communication and technical reporting skills.
  • Experience with contractor management, governance or assurance activities would be an advantage.
  • Experience within the energy, petrochemical, mining, manufacturing, FMCG or other operationally intensive industries would be beneficial.
  • Additional qualifications in safety, process safety, risk management or a related discipline would be a plus.
