Engineering Manager

Employment Type: Employment contract

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a full-stack engineering team responsible for building and scaling our payments platform, a high-scale, business-critical system processing millions of dollars in transactions every day. The core product is already in production, and the team is actively expanding it with new capabilities, integrations, and workflows as the business grows.

This is a high-impact technical leadership role for someone who combines strong people leadership with deep engineering experience. You’ll lead a team of full-stack engineers, partner closely with Product and other Engineering teams, and help drive the technical direction of a complex distributed system where correctness, reliability, scalability, and observability are critical.

The platform spans a mature and evolving technology stack, including JavaScript, TypeScript, PHP, Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL), PostgreSQL, SQS, and related technologies. Experience with every technology isn’t required, we care more about strong engineering fundamentals and experience operating complex systems at scale.

In payments, the details matter. Small mistakes can have significant financial and customer impact, so we’re looking for a leader who sets a high bar for engineering quality while enabling the team to move quickly

In this role, you’ll get to:

  • Lead and develop a team of full-stack engineers, creating a high-performing environment with clear ownership and accountability

  • Own the technical execution and engineering quality of the payments platform

  • Partner closely with Product to translate business and product requirements into scalable technical solutions

  • Help define and evolve the architecture and technical direction of a high-scale distributed payments system

  • Ensure systems are designed for correctness, reliability, scalability, resilience, and maintainability

  • Establish a high engineering bar around code quality, testing, observability, deployment, and operational readiness

  • Guide engineers through complex technical decisions involving distributed systems, databases, APIs, asynchronous workflows, and third-party integrations

  • Drive improvements to system performance, reliability, monitoring, and incident prevention

  • Ensure appropriate safeguards exist around payment processing, including idempotency, retries, failure handling, reconciliation, and data consistency

  • Lead technical planning and help the team balance new feature development, scalability improvements, and technical debt

  • Participate in architecture discussions and code/design reviews, especially for high-risk or business-critical changes

  • Own and continuously improve the team's development and delivery processes

  • Partner with other engineering teams on shared services, integrations, and platform initiatives

  • Support production systems and help establish strong incident response, root-cause analysis, and follow-up practices

  • Coach and mentor engineers, provide regular feedback, and support their technical and career growth

  • Help hire and onboard engineers as the Payments team grows

  • Drive the adoption of AI-powered development tools such as Cursor, Claude, and similar technologies to improve engineering velocity and quality

  • Help the team use AI throughout the software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, debugging, code reviews, documentation, and incident investigation

  • Experiment with new AI-enabled engineering workflows and establish best practices for using AI effectively and responsibly across the team

Who you are and what you’ll need for this position:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience building backend or full-stack systems, and 2+ years of engineering management or technical leadership experience leading software engineering teams.

  • Strong experience designing, building, and operating high-scale distributed systems in production, including systems processing high volumes of transactions, events, or financial data.

  • Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts, including asynchronous processing, idempotency, retries and failure recovery, concurrency, data consistency, transactional integrity, and fault tolerance.

  • Strong understanding of relational databases, data modeling, transactions, and database performance, along with experience designing and operating APIs and service-oriented architectures.

  • Experience with event-driven or queue-based architectures such as SQS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar technologies, and operating systems in AWS or another major cloud platform.

  • Strong understanding of testing strategies, observability, monitoring, alerting, and production incident management for complex, business-critical systems.

  • Ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs and make pragmatic decisions that balance speed, quality, scalability, and maintainability.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across Engineering, Product, and business teams, and a track record of developing engineers and building teams with high ownership and strong engineering standards.

  • Experience building or operating payments, fintech, banking, accounting, or other financial transaction systems is highly valued

  • Experience scaling systems through periods of rapid product and business growth, including incrementally modernizing established production systems, would be valuable.

  • Familiarity with PHP, JavaScript or Node.js/TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL), and AWS SQS would be a plus.

  • Exposure to security, compliance, or audit requirements within financial systems would be an advantage.
