The GitHub Cloud Agent platform provides the secure, scalable infrastructure that enables agents to autonomously perform complex software-development tasks for millions of developers and organizations. We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help shape the future of Agentic software development at GitHub.com and advance the next generation of AI-powered developer tools. 

 

On this team, you’ll build intelligent, context-aware experiences that integrate directly into the workflows developers use every day. You’ll partner with engineers, product managers, and designers across GitHub to transform cutting-edge AI into reliable, high-impact capabilities at global scale.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services and become intimately familiar with the systems you build and take pride in writing maintainable code. 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement innovative solutions.

  • Support teams in producing extensible and maintainable code, ensuring integration with downstream dependencies and adherence to quality standards. 

  • Help cultivate an environment where team members are empowered and demonstrate a strong sense of ownership and belonging. 

  • Own and advocate for the health and quality of the systems that the team builds, including participating in on-call and first responder rotations.

  • Design and implement APIs to facilitate seamless integration between software components.

  • Maintain executional and operational excellence within and potentially across teams/organizations. 

  • Apply debugging tools and telemetry to verify assumptions, proactively resolve issues, and optimize code performance and maintainability.

  • Work with the team to understand technical constraints, and develop, communicate, and track against realistic plans to consistently ship products, features, and bug fixes.

  • 6+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python

    • OR Associate’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 4+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 2+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
    • OR Doctorate in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related fie
    • OR equivalent experience. 

  • Minimum 2 years experience using general purpose programming languages (e.g., Go, Ruby, or similar)

  • Minimum 2 years Hands-on experience with modern front-end technologies (e.g., React, CSS, HTML, JavaScript/TypeScript) and design systems. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passionate about fostering good engineering practices and processes with a solid understanding of testing principles and high-quality software.

  • 1+ years of demonstrated ability to effectively leverage AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, AI code review) to improve productivity, code quality, and engineering workflows.

  • Experience with feature flag driven development and staged, reversible rollouts in a service used across multiple regions or tenancy models (for example, standard SaaS plus government/sovereign cloud style deployments). 

 

Compensation Range: The base salary range for this job is USD $124,000.00 - USD $329,200.00 /Yr.

These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual's base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee's role.

This position will be open for a minimum of 3 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
