Senior Web Engineer (React / Next.js)

Queenstown HQ or Auckland Remote (NZ)

At First Table, we’re changing how people discover and book restaurants.

Millions of diners use our platform to find great restaurants across New Zealand, Australia and the UK, and we’re continuing to grow quickly with new products, new markets and ambitious plans for the years ahead.

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Web Engineer who loves building exceptional web experiences and wants to have a genuine impact on both the product and the business.

This isn’t a role where you’ll spend months maintaining legacy systems or endlessly refining internal tooling. You’ll be shipping customer-facing features, solving interesting product problems, and helping shape the future of our platform.


What you’ll be working on

No two weeks look exactly the same.

You could be:

  • Building new customer-facing features in our booking platform
  • Creating polished, responsive interfaces with React, Next.js and Tailwind CSS
  • Prototyping entirely new product ideas
  • Improving performance, accessibility and user experience
  • Working alongside Product and Design to solve real customer problems
  • Building reusable components and evolving our design system
  • Supporting experiments and A/B testing to improve conversion
  • Occasionally contributing to our React Native mobile application
  • Helping improve our engineering practices and AI-assisted development workflows

What we’re looking for

We’re after someone who enjoys building products, not just writing code.

Ideally you’ll have:

  • Strong commercial experience with React and TypeScript
  • Experience building applications with Next.js
  • Excellent frontend engineering fundamentals
  • A good eye for UI quality and customer experience
  • Experience working closely with Product and Design teams
  • Confidence owning features from idea through to production
  • A pragmatic approach to balancing speed with quality

Bonus points if you’ve worked with:

  • React Native or Expo
  • E-commerce or marketplace products
  • Experimentation or A/B testing
  • GraphQL
  • Design systems or component libraries
  • Analytics and customer behaviour tooling

You’ll own meaningful pieces of the customer experience.

You’ll help us build products that are fast, intuitive and enjoyable to use.

You’ll influence technical decisions, improve engineering standards, mentor others where appropriate, and work alongside a team that genuinely enjoys building great software.
