Job description

This is a remote position.

ROTATIONAL CAPTAIN | Private Oyster 885 | Global Cruising Programme | Mid-November Start

UK Refit | Caribbean | Panama Canal | Pacific | Hawaii

An experienced Captain is required to join a well-run private Oyster 885 programme from mid-November.

This is an excellent role for a sailing yacht Captain looking to be part of an active private programme with a varied and ambitious cruising schedule. The yacht is currently in Norway and will move to the UK for an autumn refit with Oyster, giving the successful candidate time to get to know the vessel, owners, and crew before the next phase of the itinerary. Plans include the Caribbean, a Panama Canal transit in February/March, onward cruising through the Pacific, and a winter season in Hawaii.

The owners are enthusiastic sailors and typically spend around six months each year onboard. They enjoy being involved with the running of the yacht, so the role calls for someone who is confident, well organised, and comfortable working closely with engaged owners. Clear communication, careful planning, strong attention to detail, and sound judgement are all important.

The position would suit a Captain with existing command experience and excellent engineering knowledge on a comparable sailing yacht who is ready to develop further within a supportive, long-term programme. The owners place a strong emphasis on attitude, leadership potential, reliability, and the ability to manage the yacht in a calm and structured way.

The yacht has a fully rotational crew set-up. A single Captain is preferred due to the structure of the rotation, although strong Captain and Chef couple team may also be considered.

During their on rotation, the Captain will oversee the safe, efficient, and professional operation of the yacht, leading a close crew and maintaining high standards across safety, maintenance, presentation, and owner experience. The Captain will ensure a smooth working relationship/handover with the other rotational Captain. This is a busy private programme with committed owners who value continuity, professionalism, and long-term crew relationships.

Package

  • Salary dependent on experience
  • Rotational position, with 2:2 - currently under discussion for the Pacific cruising section to see what works best.
  • Annual salary review
  • Performance-related bonus
  • One professional training course each year
  • Long-term opportunity within a stable private programme

Requirements

  • Previous command experience on a similar-sized or larger sailing yacht
  • Strong organisational and planning skills
  • Professional and approachable leadership style
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with hands-on owners
  • Valid seagoing certifications and documentation
