Southern New Hampshire University is seeking a student employee to fill the role of English Teacher for Adults for our partner organization Intercambio Uniting Communities. Intercambio Uniting Communities is seeking dedicated and passionate individuals to serve as English teachers for individual online instruction with adult English learners. As an Online teacher, you will play a vital role in helping learner improve their English language skills, enhancing their confidence, and building life-changing connections.

Job Responsibilities

  • Teaching English: Using Intercambio’s relationship-based adult online ESL curriculum, Confidence and Connections, Online teachers plan and deliver English lessons to one learner.  Online Teachers use the Intercambio Learning System to lead interactive, fun, and engaging lessons, while promoting a cooperative learning environment.
  • Fostering Cultural Connections:  Online teachers embrace the “Intercambio Way” which promotes opportunities for learners and teachers to learn from each other about their cultures, perspectives, experiences, and traditions while learning and teaching English. 

Minimum Qualification

  • Current enrollment in classes as part of a SNHU degree program
  • Work study part of financial aid package
  • Students with work study may be prioritized
  • Passion for building community, teaching English, and helping learners succeed.
  • Patience, empathy, a positive attitude, and a spirit of life-long learning.
  • Basic computer knowledge to use a video-conferencing platform, similar to Zoom, to conduct online classes (working camera and microphone).
  • Do not need to speak a language other than English.
  • No prior teaching or tutoring experience in English required. Our materials are designed to be used by people of all different backgrounds and to make it as easy as possible for anyone with patience, enthusiasm, and a desire to learn and connect with others to teach English.
  • Designated time in your schedule to hold two 90-minute classes per week, plus about 30 minutes for lesson preparation.  Intercambio will find a learner who you can meet at the time you are available.  If you have more than 4 hours a week, you can teach more than one learner!

Time Commitment

  • Online teachers meet with their students for 90 minutes, 2 times a week to complete at least two Confidence and Curriculum books (about a 6-month commitment).    After completing two books, Online teachers are encouraged to continue with their students for subsequent books. 
  • The class schedule is based on the availability provided by teachers and learners.

Training and Ongoing Support:

  • All Online Teachers must complete Intercambio’s training for new teachers, which includes approximately 8 hours of online training video modules that can be completed independently and one 2-hour live Zoom online training session. Upon successful completion of this training, trained teachers will receive a certificate of completion from Intercambio for to become an English teacher for adults.
  • In addition to the required training for Online teachers, Intercambio also provides ongoing workshops, Teacher Connection Hours, and a summer conference to help support teachers to continue to improve their skills.  These sessions are recommended but not required.

Compensation

The hourly pay range for this position is $13.00 - $15.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations.
