Equality Florida is the state's largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. We're changing Florida through lobbying, grassroots organizing, education, and coalition building β€” so that no one suffers harassment or discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

Since our founding in 1997, we’ve become one of the largest statewide LGBTQ groups in the country with more than 400,000 supporters, more than 15,000 volunteers, and staff located in major Florida cities to organize and support our work.

Framework and Position Summary:

Equality Florida consistently leads efforts to advance LGBTQ+ equality across Florida. Based on both vision and need, we are hiring three Communications Fellows to help support our critical work during a time of unprecedented attacks on LGBTQ+ Floridians.

The Communications team at Equality Florida plays a vital role in shaping public narrative, educating communities, and mobilizing support for LGBTQ+ rights across the state. Through strategic messaging and compelling storytelling, we combat misinformation, build bridges across communities, and highlight the real impacts of anti-LGBTQ legislation. Our communications work is essential in advancing our mission during this critical time of increased attacks on LGBTQ+ Floridians.

Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Communications, our Communications Fellows will focus on supporting initiatives that advance equality and combat discrimination. Through our collective programs, we fight discrimination by empowering vulnerable populations while challenging interwoven systems of oppression. Our power lies in the ability to affect large-scale, systemic change across communities and throughout Florida.

The Communications Fellow is:

  • A passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ equality in Florida
  • An individual who is technologically savvy
  • A creative digital storyteller who can translate complex policy issues into compelling content
  • Someone who understands the power of personal narratives in creating social change

Key Responsibilities:

Content Creation & Messaging

  • Craft compelling messages that build bridges across diverse communities
  • Develop educational content to combat misinformation about LGBTQ+ issues
  • Assist in creating social media posts, graphics, and other digital assets
  • Support the development of press releases, statements, and other external communications as needed

Digital Advocacy & Education

  • Help explain the real impacts of anti-LGBTQ legislation to various audiences
  • Assist in developing materials to engage our supporters, members, donors and volunteers
  • Support digital campaigns that mobilize supporters and educate the public
  • Track and analyze engagement metrics to improve communications strategies

Storytelling & Community Engagement

  • Collect and help tell personal stories that highlight our shared values
  • Assist in documenting the impacts of discriminatory policies on LGBTQ+ Floridians
  • Support community outreach efforts to amplify diverse voices
  • Help create content that connects LGBTQ+ issues to broader values of dignity, respect, and fairness

Qualifications:

  • Experience or education in communications, journalism, marketing, or related fields
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital communication tools
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Basic graphic design skills and/or willingness to learn
  • Understanding of LGBTQ+ issues and commitment to equality
  • Candidates must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to advancing Equality Florida's goals and objectives

What Else You Should Know:

  • This is a part-time, temporary fellowship position.
  • Pay rate: $15/hour or $18/hour for South Florida applicants
  • Hours: 15 hours per week for 12 weeks
