The People Operations Generalist is a trusted partner on the People Team, helping create a seamless and supportive experience for employees throughout their journey at OpenEd. This role owns core people operations across the employee lifecycle while ensuring compliance, improving processes, and helping the People Team operate efficiently and scale as OpenEd continues to grow. Success in this role comes from balancing sound judgement, thoughtful problem-solving, and a genuine desire to support both employees and the business in a fast-paced, remote environment.

Your Immediate Impact

HR Operations & Data Management

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records in the HRIS, including new hires, job changes, terminations, and personal information updates.

  • Serve as the primary owner of People Team documentation and resources, including the People Team Wiki and shared drives.

  • Own employment compliance activities, including I-9s, E-Verify, employment records, and state hiring requirements while helping ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws.

  • Produce recurring HR metrics and reporting, including headcount reporting, HRIS dashboards, and recurring People Team insights. Identify trends or discrepancies requiring follow-up and recommend automations.

Talent Acquisition Support

  • Own full-cycle recruiting for assigned requisitions as hiring volume requires — including intake meetings with hiring managers, sourcing and pipeline development, resume review, phone screens, interview panel coordination, candidate debriefs, and closing offers.

  • Draft, refine, and post job descriptions on job boards and internal channels, ensuring accuracy, inclusive language, and compliance with pay transparency requirements.

  • Maintain an organized applicant tracking process, ensuring candidates receive timely updates and a smooth, responsive experience.

  • Coordinate candidate interviews, scheduling, and communication with hiring managers.

  • Partner with hiring managers on role scoping, interview structure, and consistent evaluation criteria.

  • Assist with early-career recruitment efforts, when requested.

  • Prepare, deliver, and track offer packets and pre-employment activities through completion.

Onboarding & Offboarding Support

  • Serve as the primary operational owner for onboarding, ensuring every new hire has a consistent, welcoming experience from offer acceptance through first day.

  • Ensure all onboarding activities, including: documentation, system access, and employee communications, are completed accurately and on time.

  • Lead day-one onboarding logistics (paperwork, intros, system access).

  • Ensure smooth offboarding by coordinating final paperwork, HRIS updates, and offboarding tasks.

  • Partner with the People Team on improving onboarding/offboarding workflows and experience.

Benefit Administration

  • Administer benefit enrollments, qualifying life events, and employee benefit changes while partnering with vendors to resolve issues.

  • Coordinate the operational execution of annual open enrollment, including some employee communications, enrollment changes, and vendor coordination.

  • Assist with audits, reconciliations, and coordination with benefits vendors.

Employee Experience & Communications

  • Assist with maintaining People Team communication channels, including shared inboxes and Slack announcements.

  • Support employer branding and employee advocacy initiatives, including updates to job postings, templates, and company-facing People Team content

  • Help coordinate employee events, celebrations, recognition programs, and other culture initiatives.

General Administrative & Projects

  • Independently manage competing priorities across multiple HR workstreams while meeting deadlines and maintaining accuracy.

  • Exercise sound judgement in determining when to act independently and when to seek guidance.

  • Communicate proactively when priorities shift, deadlines are at risk, or additional support is needed.

  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to streamline processes and improve the employee experience.

  • Partner with the Senior HRBP and VP of People on strategic initiatives, process improvements, and operational priorities.

Employee Relations

  • Interpret and communicate company policies and People Team practices while partnering with leaders to ensure consistent application.

  • Partner with the Senior HRBP and VP of People to support employee relations matters, including documentation, follow-up, and administrative coordination.

  • Escalate sensitive or complex employee concerns appropriately while exercising sound judgement and discretion.

Qualifications/Job Requirements

  • 3+ years of progressive Human Resources experience in one or more functional areas such as employee relations, recruiting, onboarding, HR operations, benefits administration, or compliance (startup or multi-state experience a plus).

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing business needs.

  • Strong judgment, problem-solving skills, and the ability to determine when to work independently versus when to escalate questions or concerns.

  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and follow-through.

  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.

  • Ability to prioritize competing work, adapt to changing business needs, and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced remote environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Familiarity with HRIS, ATS platforms, and basic HR processes (BambooHR & Ashby experience is a plus).

  • Customer-focused mindset, with professionalism and empathy in all interactions.

Success Metrics

  • The People Team runs more smoothly because routine tasks are handled accurately and proactively.

  • Managers trust the People Team as responsive, knowledgeable partners who provide timely guidance and support.

  • Onboarding feels consistent, welcoming, and organized.

  • HR data is clean, up-to-date, and easily reportable.

  • Employees feel supported with timely, friendly responses.

  • HR processes continue to improve through thoughtful recommendations and operational efficiencies.

  • The Senior HRBP and VP of People can focus more time on strategic work, coaching, and long-term initiatives.

Scheduling/Requirements

  • Full time, salaried exempt position.

  • This role generally works during standard Mountain Time business hours, with flexibility to support seasonal hiring cycles and key People Team priorities as business needs evolve.

  • Access to a smartphone, high-speed internet, computer, webcam, and headset.

  • Familiarity with Google products such as Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Forms, Sheet, etc.

  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.

This position reports to Caroline Laney, VP of People.
