Description

Position Summary 

An Outbound Referral Specialist is responsible for managing and coordinating the process of referring patients or clients to external healthcare providers or services. This role is common in healthcare organizations where patients may need specialized care beyond the scope of the primary facility. 


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate outbound referrals for patients, ensuring timely and appropriate access to specialized healthcare services.
  • Work closely with healthcare providers to gather necessary information for referrals.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of outbound referrals, including patient information, medical history, and referral outcomes.
  • Communicate with patients to explain the referral process, provide necessary information, and address any concerns or questions.
  • Liaise with external healthcare providers to coordinate appointments and transfer relevant patient information.
  • Verify insurance coverage for referred services to ensure proper authorization and coverage for the patient.
  • Follow up with patients to ensure they attended their referred appointments and address any issues or barriers to care.
  • Collaborate with internal healthcare teams, including physicians, nurses, and administrative staff, to ensure a seamless referral process.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant healthcare regulations and guidelines in the referral process.
  • Analyze referral data to identify trends, track outcomes, and make recommendations for process improvement.
  • Advocate for patients to ensure they receive appropriate and timely care through the referral process.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance in accordance with company policies and departmental scheduling requirements. 
  • Perform all other duties as assigned. 
Requirements

 Minimum Qualifications

  • A background in healthcare administration, nursing, or a related field is often preferred.
  • Previous experience in healthcare coordination, referral management, or a related role is beneficial.


Skills and Abilities

  • Basic understanding of medical terminology, healthcare procedures, and the referral process.
  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with patients, healthcare providers, and internal staff.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple referrals simultaneously.
  • Ability to identify and address challenges in the referral process.
  • A compassionate and empathetic approach when dealing with patients who may be facing complex healthcare needs.
  • Attention to detail is crucial to ensure accurate documentation and coordination of referrals.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in healthcare policies, procedures, or referral protocols.

Physical Requirements

  • May need to sit for extended periods and use a computer and telephone extensively. This may involve using a computer and telephone for extended periods.
  • Visual Requirements: Good vision is important for reading information on computer screens, documents, and customer information.
  • Hearing: Adequate hearing is essential for understanding customer inquiries and conversations. 
  • Repetitive Movements: Typing, clicking a mouse, and using a headset are common repetitive movements.
  • May need to go up and down stairs. 
  • Lifting required up to 30 pounds.
