Legal Action Chicago is a close partner with Legal Aid Chicago, the Midwest’s largest provider of free civil legal services to people who are living in poverty. We work closely with the advocates at Legal Aid Chicago and with community groups to identify the most pressing policy and systemic issues affecting low-income families, with a special focus on racial equity. We litigate class actions, pursue legislative and administrative initiatives, and undertake other forms of community-based policy advocacy to effect systemic changes. Learn more about our work at www.legalactionchicago.org.
Our work is not limited to one issue area or advocacy method. For example, Legal Action Chicago has used a variety of litigation and policy advocacy tools to tackle issues ranging from harmful public housing rent policies to protection of family finances from creditors to protecting people in abusive relationships and much more. Our work spans the subject matter of all of Legal Aid Chicago’s practice groups (Children & Families, Consumer, Housing, Immigrants & Workers’ Rights, Pro Bono & Community Partnerships, and Public Benefits), and we welcome applicants who have cross-cutting interests and experiences.
Legal Action Chicago has a small staff of five attorneys plus government relations contractors. It purchases all “back office” functions from Legal Aid Chicago. But it has a growing need for administrative capacity, including record-keeping, development activities, social media, events, research and calendar maintenance. It is a collegial and cooperative atmosphere and a “hybrid” approach allowing a substantial portion of work time to be remote.
Position: Legal Action Chicago seeks a part-time (60%) Administrative Assistant. The position could expand to more time as the organization grows.
Responsibilities:
Salary: $28,005.00 and up depending on experience. This is 60% of the full-time entry level salary for the comparable position at Legal Aid Chicago. Benefits are not available but could become so if the position expands in the future.
We seek someone with experience and capacity for basic computerized record-keeping and communications, organizational ability, and social media skills. Preferred but not required are development experience, graphic art skills, and language skills. The successful applicant will be collegial, well-organized, and supportive of our mission.
To Apply: Submit a cover letter, resume, and the contact information of two primary professional references and one alternative professional reference. For applicants with previous work experience, at least one reference must be a former supervisor. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the position will remain open until filled.
Legal Action Chicago is firmly committed to creating a diverse workplace and is proud to provide equal employment opportunities to all applicants and therefore does not discriminate on the basis of creed, color, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, marital or parental status, alienage, disability, political affiliation or belief, military or military discharge status, or ex-offender status. Applicants who have experiences with our client communities are encouraged to apply.
If an accommodation is needed to complete this application, contact Human Resources at humanresources@legalaidchicago.org.
Due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to respond to individual inquiries regarding an application status. We will contact candidates who are selected for the next stage of the hiring process.
After you apply, unlock the direct contact details of the people who actually make the call. A quick follow-up makes you 5x more likely to land an interview.
