Job description

Job Title : Rigger
Division : Weir Minerals
Location : Onsite


Purpose of Role:

A Rigger will be responsible for the safe planning, preparation, lifting, moving, positioning, and securing of heavy equipment, machinery, and loads using lifting equipment such as slings, chains, shackles, hooks, hoists, cranes, and other rigging equipment. And Assist on a general maintenance activities around the facility.

Key Responsibilities:


1. Safety First
Ensure all lifting and rigging activities are conducted safely by complying with site safety procedures, conducting risk assessments, inspecting lifting equipment, and identifying hazards to prevent injuries, incidents, and damage to equipment and property.

2. Lifting and Rigging Operations
Plan, prepare, and execute lifting activities by selecting appropriate rigging equipment, determining load weights and centres of gravity, securing loads correctly, and ensuring safe load handling throughout the lifting process.

3. Equipment Inspection and Maintenance
Conduct routine inspections of slings, chains, shackles, lifting beams, and associated lifting gear, ensuring all equipment is fit for purpose, properly maintained, and removed from service when defects are identified.

4. Communication and Operational Coordination
Provide clear direction and communication to crane operators and lifting teams using approved hand signals and communication methods, ensuring lifting operations are executed efficiently, safely, and according to lifting plans and procedures.



Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications:


  • Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification.
  • Valid Rigger Trade Certificate / Red Seal qualification with relevant lifting and rigging experience in an industrial or mining environment.
  • Sound knowledge of lifting equipment, rigging techniques, safe lifting practices, and applicable health and safety legislation.
  • Ability to read and interpret lifting plans, load charts, risk assessments, and technical drawings, with effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with hand tools and power tools
  • Be able to work at heights and confined spaces
