The Clinical Account Coordinator — Phlebotomist is an on-site, client-embedded role responsible for performing blood specimen collection for Tempus patients at a customer location. This is a hands-on phlebotomy position: the majority of the day is spent drawing blood, ensuring specimen integrity, and coordinating collections with the on-site clinical team. The role also sustains a superior Tempus experience by supporting ordering, scheduling, and specimen logistics. This position may be dedicated full-time to a single account or support multiple accounts within a 20-mile radius.
Primary Responsibilities
Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection
- Obtain blood specimens by performing venipunctures on Tempus patients, selecting the best collection method for each patient.
- Maintain specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department
- procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
- Prepare, label, and package specimens for laboratory testing following Tempus and site protocols.
- Track collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting collection times, and by maintaining accurate daily collection logs.
- Verify test orders by comparing patient information against requisition forms and EMR records; bring discrepancies to the attention of site personnel and resolve them before collection.
- Verify patient identity prior to every draw and confirm the correct test requisition.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following clinical standards and procedures and complying with federal, state, and local regulations.
Collection Coordination & Logistics
- Schedule blood draws and coordinate collection times with on-site clinic requirements, including mobile phlebotomy appointments where applicable.
- Monitor sample shipments between Tempus, client pathology, and partner facilities; coordinate courier pickups and confirm chain of custody.
- Update job status and specimen tracking information in Tempus systems in a timely manner.
- Manage phlebotomy supply and kit stock at the account, ensuring collection materials and literature are replenished.
Customer Support
- Assist clinical staff with Tempus ordering and requisition forms.
- Collaborate with on-site clinical staff to resolve customer service requests and respond to patient and provider inquiries.
- Support patients with the Tempus Financial Assistance Program application.
- Build and nurture relationships with physicians and clinical staff to guarantee a superior Tempus experience.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; BS/BA degree or RN preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of phlebotomy experience required; oncology experience preferred.
- National Phlebotomy Certification required or obtained per the requirements of the state of practice.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture, aseptic technique, and specimen handling.
- Experience with Epic or comparable EMR systems preferred.
- Strong customer-service orientation and the ability to work independently in a client-embedded setting.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- On-site at a customer clinical location; scrubs, closed-toed shoes, and appropriate PPE (facemasks and gloves) required.
- Work schedule is determined by clinic requirements; time may be split between client sites and home.
- Requires standing for extended periods and the ability to lift and carry collection and shipping materials.
- This role ensures that Tempus delivers safe, accurate specimen collection and excellent support to our clinical partners, improving the overall patient experience and operational efficiency.
