Job Description

Responsibilities

• Training: All new Faculty Members receive specific training from Walden University in online teaching best practices, use of the Canvas learning management system, university policies and procedures, academic integrity standards (including the use of Turnitin), faculty mentorship practices, student support strategies, and the facilitation of applied doctoral research and Capstone projects.
• Course Teaching: Faculty Members are assigned a course, which is taught using the eCollege platform, and are responsible for interacting with students within this platform. Discussion Boards for classrooms are open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Although postings to the classroom may be done at any time of day, they must be completed in a timely manner in accordance with the Faculty Handbook or other criteria established by Walden University. Per the faculty handbook, responses to student questions must be posted within 48 hours. Faculty Members are required to verify the accuracy of student postings and submissions and to provide feedback and grades to students through Canvas.
• Faculty Mentorship: Faculty Members serve as Faculty Mentors for a cohort of Doctor of Public Safety and Leadership students from the Professional Study Seminar sequence through completion of the Capstone project. Faculty Mentors provide ongoing academic guidance, encouragement, and professional support while helping students navigate program milestones, develop scholarly and leadership competencies, and successfully complete their Capstone projects.

• Scholarly and Professional Engagement: Faculty Members are expected to contribute to the advancement of practitioner-scholar learning through the integration of professional experience, applied research, evidence-based practice, and leadership expertise. Faculty are encouraged to remain current in emerging trends, research, and innovations affecting public safety and leadership disciplines.
• Availability: Walden expects faculty to be reasonably accessible to students. Faculty members are expected to be available to students outside the course discussion board and in addition to providing substantive feedback on assignments and postings. Faculty members will publish their availability to students through course syllabi, instructor information in the classroom, and/or other appropriate documents. The university suggests regular and predictable availability, such as online office hours or regular online chats.
• Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Earned doctoral degree in Public Safety, Criminal Justice, Leadership, Public Administration, Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Organizational Leadership, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
• Demonstrated professional experience in public safety, leadership, criminal justice, emergency management, homeland security, public administration, or a related field.
• 3+ years of teaching experience at the degree level of the program is preferred.
• 2+ years online or technology-enabled instruction experience.
• Experience guiding students through the development, implementation, evaluation, and presentation of Capstone projects addressing complex public safety or organizational leadership challenges.
• Experience supporting practitioner-scholar learning and applied research methodologies designed to address real-world organizational and public safety challenges preferred.
• Demonstrated commitment to student engagement, retention, persistence, and successful degree completion in an online doctoral learning environment.
• Strong teaching, advising, mentoring, leadership, communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to supporting diverse learners and fostering an inclusive academic environment.
• Candidates should possess a record of professional leadership and scholarly contributions that advance public safety practice, organizational effectiveness, and leadership development.
• Faculty members are required to have an adequate computer to handle an electronic learning platform, keyboard, pointing device, and computer monitor. All other tools are knowledge-based or training-based through Walden University. The Faculty Member must be able to use Microsoft Office products (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint), zip software, and Adobe Acrobat and must have reliable Internet access as well as alternate access in cases where primary access becomes unavailable.
• Commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students earning their degrees in a distance learning environment.
• Teaching, advising and mentoring; commitment to the promotion of applied research and the recruitment and development of a diverse faculty; excellent leadership, communication, team, and human relations skills.
• Experience with distance learning preferred.
• Faculty Members must be appropriately credentialed, possess an earned degree from an accredited institution or recognized by a country's ministry of education in the discipline being taught, and may be expected to be licensed or license-eligible in order to teach in specific programs.
• Faculty Members must maintain their licenses and any appropriate certifications in order to continue to teach at Walden University.
• Faculty Members are also expected to maintain currency with research by reviewing articles, journals, and presentations. If participating in research, the Faculty Member may publish and acknowledge Walden University
• Working knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies, or a demonstrated willingness to embrace and responsibly apply emerging AI applications to enhance teaching, mentoring, student learning, applied research, and professional practice.
