Job description

Backend Engineer

Build the backend powering Fundable’s API, AI services, MCP, and workflow platform.

About Fundable

Fundable provides real-time startup data and signals that help growth teams find new startup customers and help investors source their next deals. Our data plugs directly into existing workflows through our API, MCP, and native integrations.

The role

We’re looking for a backend engineer to own Fundable’s core data products from architecture through production. The role centers on building new customer-facing APIs, AI services, and a native workflow builder. This is a high-autonomy role for someone who can work directly with Fundable’s founders to make architectural decisions and own end-to-end product implementation.

What you’ll own:

API development

Lead the development of our new external API from end-to-end:

  • API design: researching industry-leading APIs and problem solving with founders on the final OpenAPI spec.

  • Architecture: deciding where to host what frameworks to leverage.

  • Implementation and deployment: building optimized SQL queries that support dynamic filtering.

AI microservices

  • Building, deploying, and testing agentic microservices that convert natural language / free-text queries into deterministic filters / permalinks.

  • Modernizing Fundable MCP to leverage updated API routes and implement customer-scoped authentication and auditable credit charging.

Workflow builder

Build Fundable’s workflow product end to end, similar to n8n, so customers can create recurring automations using Fundable data.

  • Architecture design: work with founders to define the workflow schema, execution model, and deployment architecture.

  • Implementation and deployment: build scheduling, execution, persistence, retries, deduplication, and integration suite.

What we’re looking for

  • Strong backend engineering experience building production systems from scratch.

  • Strong TypeScript/Node.js or Python skills, plus SQL and Postgres experience.

  • Experience designing APIs, data models, and distributed jobs with authentication, idempotency, retries, and observability.

  • Understands how to use AI tooling (e.g., Claude, Codex) to build maintainable, modular systems without sacrificing quality.

  • Practical experience with LLM-backed systems, agentic frameworks, RAG, structured outputs, evaluations, and deterministic validation.

  • Clear product judgment and communication in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.

  • Deployed production systems using cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure).

Nice to have

  • Experience working with open-source LLMs.

  • Search, entity resolution, workflow engines, or complex data products.

  • Experience working with GCP services (e.g., Google Cloud Run).

  • React/Next.js experience and the ability to ship customer-facing product flows.

  • Experience with Supabase, Vercel, Clerk, and Stripe.

How we work

We value engineers who help solve ambiguous design problems and own solutions from architecture through production. We are AI-first and continuously focused on improving how we work. We start with daily standups, then move to less frequent check-ins once we establish a strong working rhythm. Strong judgment and ownership matter more than experience with every technology in our stack.
