Job Description

The General Manager, Finance and Controller is accountable for safeguarding the integrity, reliability, transparency, and stewardship of Canada Post's financial information, reporting, controls, and tax governance. The incumbent will provide enterprise leadership over corporate accounting, financial reporting, accounting policy, internal control over financial reporting (ICFR), taxation, delegation of authority, subsidiary oversight, and compliance with IFRS and statutory reporting requirements.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supports in developing and maintaining financial models, accounting policies, tax governance, control frameworks, and financial governance practices that are consistent with IFRS, statutory requirements, ICFR, and operational planning needs.
  • Ensures the integrity of Canada Post’s financial governance framework by overseeing accounting policy, financial reporting, ICFR, delegation of authority, tax governance, compliance practices, and stewardship of corporate financial records, and by advising senior leadership on financial risks and emerging reporting issues.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with Central Agencies, shareholder representatives, regulators, and other external stakeholders; represents Canada Post on financial reporting, taxation, governance, and compliance matters; and ensures information requirements are met in a timely, accurate, and transparent manner.
  • Oversees corporate financial reporting, including consolidated financial statements, quarterly and annual reporting, statutory filings, Annual Report disclosures, and other external reporting prepared in accordance with IFRS and applicable legislative requirements.
  • Provides leadership on significant accounting judgments, estimates, disclosures, emerging accounting standards, and the accounting implications of strategic initiatives, business changes, and financial reporting matters.
  • Reviews and reports on the financial activities of subsidiary companies, ensuring consistent accounting policies, appropriate financial reporting, governance practices, tax compliance, control expectations, consolidation impacts, and consideration of cross-subsidization requirements.

Job Responsibilities (continued)

  • Ensures that appropriate and adequate controls, documentation, audit trails, and working papers exist across corporate and subsidiary financial records; supports audit readiness, ICFR requirements, management representations, and resolution of audit observations; and maintains effective working relationships with external auditors.
  • Maintains and periodically reviews the Corporation’s delegation of authority framework to ensure appropriate decision rights, accountability, risk management, operational effectiveness, and control discipline.
  • Develops and implements taxation policy, strategy, and governance relating to corporate income tax, employee taxation matters, GST/HST, provincial sales taxes, customs and excise duties, and other tax obligations, ensuring tax positions are compliant, supportable, and aligned with public accountability expectations.
  • Leads continuous improvement and modernization initiatives across accounting, reporting, tax, control, and governance processes through automation, standardization, process redesign, improved data quality, and scalable finance systems.
  • Leads the Controller organization by planning resources, managing budgets, supporting performance and career development, advancing succession planning, and fostering a high-performing, inclusive, accountable, and professionally strong finance team.

Qualifications

Education
•    Completed University Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field is required.
•    Professional certification as a CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) or CA (Chartered Accountant) is required.

Experience
•    Minimum of 10 to 15 years’ experience in a senior accounting or financial leadership role.

•    Strong oral and written communication skills.
•    An experienced leader, with a successful track record of establishing high performing finance teams, and a genuine focus on people development and talent management.
•    A self-starter with strong business acumen, critical thinking skills, and a demonstrated desire to learn, grow, and contribute value.
•    Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex financial information clearly to senior leaders, Board-level audiences, and external stakeholders.
