Position Summary:        

The Privacy Specialist I supports the organization's privacy program through monitoring, auditing, investigation support, patient rights administration, education, and compliance activities. Working under the direction of the Privacy Manager, this role assists with maintaining compliance with HIPAA and other applicable privacy laws while helping foster a culture of privacy and compliance throughout the organization.

Core Responsibilities:

• Assist with privacy risk assessments and support remediation efforts for identified risks
• Provide support for privacy initiatives and annual compliance work plan activities
• Update and collaborate on privacy policies, procedures, and training to ensure ongoing compliance with evolving regulatory requirements
• Assist staff with handling requests for patient information and processing other legal/regulatory requests as needed
• Assist with the investigation of potential or actual breaches of protected health information (PHI) and other privacy-related data; assist in the development and implementation of corrective action plans for identified issues and coordinate applicable follow-up with action plan owners
• Conduct routine monitoring and auditing to assess the organization’s compliance with privacy requirements; partner with appropriate departments and individuals to resolve noted findings
• Process and track requests for Accounting of Disclosures, Amendments of PHI, and Requests to Restrict Use and Disclosure
• Coordinate and track business associate inventory
• Assist with maintaining a data inventory for new and existing products, services and business processes
• Analyze trends of key performance indicator results for performance improvement opportunities
• Analyze privacy metrics and identify opportunities for process improvement
• Draft and distribute reports weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually
• Continually improve and update knowledge to accommodate changes to the organization’s regulatory environment and needs

Experience, Education and Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in a healthcare related field) or equivalent work experience required
• 1+ year of experience in healthcare compliance, privacy, health information management, healthcare operations, risk management, laboratory operations, or a related field preferred

•  Working knowledge of HIPAA Privacy Rule requirements and healthcare privacy principles
• Familiarity with healthcare compliance programs and regulatory requirements
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines, as well as adapt to changing business needs
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive information
• Ability to participate in team projects and fill various roles such as team member, facilitator, or leader as needed
• Experience reviewing, organizing, and tracking compliance data and documentation
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

• Familiarity with healthcare technology systems such as EHRs, laboratory information systems, or incident management systems preferred
