Role Overview
We are seeking a technically strong and quality-focused Senior Accountant to support complex Australian tax, compliance, financial statements, review work, and junior team development.
The selected candidate will act as a senior technical resource within the accounting function, preparing complex work, reviewing the work of junior accountants, reducing rework, improving quality standards, and supporting the Head of Accounting with accurate, timely, and compliant accounting output.
Key Responsibilities
Complex Compliance and Advisory Support
- Prepare complex company, trust, and group tax returns.
- Prepare financial statements for Australian business clients.
- Handle technical tax matters including Division 7A, CGT, trust distributions, and tax planning calculations.
- Prepare technical workpapers that can withstand ATO review and scrutiny.
- Support advisers with tax modelling, technical calculations, and accounting queries.
- Assist with structuring support and complex client accounting requirements.
- Ensure all work is completed accurately, efficiently, and in line with Australian tax and compliance requirements.
Review and Quality Control
- Review work prepared by Associate and Intermediate Accountants.
- Identify errors, inconsistencies, and compliance risks before work reaches clients.
- Provide clear, specific, and constructive review points that help junior team members improve.
- Take ownership of first-time-right quality for reviewed jobs.
- Reduce rework through proper review, coaching, and process discipline.
- Escalate genuine technical uncertainties to the Head of Accounting with clear recommendations.
- Maintain high standards of accuracy, documentation, and technical judgement.
Mentoring and Capability Building
- Mentor junior accountants and support their technical development.
- Convert recurring review points into training opportunities.
- Share knowledge on Australian tax, compliance, workpapers, and review standards.
- Help build a stronger accounting team through coaching, guidance, and practical feedback.
- Support process improvements to reduce repeated errors and improve team efficiency.
- Ensure own jobs and reviewed jobs continue moving through the workflow without unnecessary delays.
Workflow, Reporting and Process Improvement
- Manage assigned jobs according to deadlines and workflow requirements.
- Keep review queues moving and ensure turnaround timelines are maintained.
- Identify recurring process issues and recommend practical improvements.
- Support consistent use of accounting systems, tax software, and workflow tools.
- Maintain proper documentation, review notes, technical records, and workpaper files.
- Contribute to improved productivity, quality control, and team performance.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Australian public practice accounting.
- Strong experience preparing complex company, trust, and group tax returns.
- Strong technical knowledge of Division 7A, CGT, trust distributions, company tax, and tax planning.
- Experience preparing Australian financial statements and tax compliance work.
- Proven experience reviewing the work of junior or intermediate accountants.
- Ability to provide feedback that teaches and improves team capability.
- Strong judgement with the ability to know when to decide independently and when to escalate.
- Ability to escalate technical issues with analysis and recommendations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work during Australian business hours.
- Strong experience using Xero, Australian tax software, and practice workflow tools.
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Strong ownership, reliability, and ability to work under workload pressure.
- Ability to maintain quality standards during busy periods.
