Job description

Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club is the oldest conservation, education, and outdoor recreation organization in the United States. AMC helps people enjoy and protect the outdoors through conservation, recreation, lodging, education, and volunteer-led experiences across the Northeast.

AMC is hiring a Director of Product to lead a new product function and help guide a multi-year technology roadmap across member and donor systems, lodging and booking, volunteer technology, data, and shared platforms. This role will translate organizational priorities into clear product decisions, connect business needs with technology delivery, and build practical ways for AMC to prioritize, sequence, and measure technology work. This role reports to the Vice President of Technology and works closely with leaders across AMC’s business, operations, and mission teams. Product at AMC is business-facing, technology-aware, and accountable for value. The Director of Product will partner closely with technology leaders who own architecture, systems, integrations, infrastructure, project coordination, and support.

The role can be remote, but the candidate must be within driving distance of AMC’s lodges and locations for attending meetings, staff gatherings, and other events.

What You Will Lead

  • You will lead product strategy and execution across AMC’s highest-priority technology streams:

  • Member and donor experience, including CRM, membership, giving, self-service, and constituent data.

  • Lodging, booking, and hospitality technology, including guest experience, reservation platforms, and related integrations.

  • Volunteer and community systems, including onboarding, access, communications, and support experiences.

  • Data, reporting, integrations, and shared platforms that help AMC operate as a more connected organization.

What You Will Be Doing At AMC

  • Own and refine AMC’s product roadmap, organizing work around measurable mission and business outcomes.

  • Translate AMC’s technology roadmap into clear priorities, sequencing, tradeoffs, risks, and decisions.

  • Convert business and user needs into clear requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, success metrics, and launch plans.

  • Establish practical product practices for intake, prioritization, backlog ownership, sprint readiness, stakeholder review, release planning, and adoption measurement.

  • Lead product reviews with senior leaders, clearly communicating progress, risks, dependencies, and decisions needed.

  • Partner with technology leaders, implementation partners, business stakeholders, and frontline users to ensure work is valuable, feasible, adopted, and measurable.

  • Coach product managers or product owners and set a standard for transparent prioritization and disciplined delivery.
