Job Title: MMRP Technical Editor/Writer III
Location: Remote in U.S.


Description/Job Summary

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

HGL is seeking an experienced Technical Editor/Writer to support the Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Service Line. This position is responsible for writing support, editing, document production, and controlled deliverable management for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) projects. The ideal candidate is a meticulous editor with strong technical writing skills who can partner with scientists, geophysicists, and project managers to deliver clear, accurate, client-ready documents on schedule. This is a 32-hour a week, salary exempt position open to remote work in the U.S.



Responsibilities/Duties

 

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING 

 

Technical Editing and Writing Support (Primary Focus)

  • Provide hands-on technical editing for complex environmental remediation and military munitions response program documents, ensuring clarity, consistency, and compliance with HGL and USACE standards.
  • Serve as technical writer (lead author), edit and format Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA)-related and MMRP-specific deliverables, including (but not limited to):
  • Project planning, Project Management Plans (PMP);
  • Project Uniform Federal Policy Quality Assurance Project Plans (UFP-QAPPs) and Munitions Response (MR)-QAPPs (Module 1 or Module 2);
  • Data Usability Assessments (DUA) and updated or revised conceptual site model (CSM) summaries;
  • Remedial Investigation Reports, Feasibility Studies, Proposed Plans, Record of Decisions/Decision Documents, remedial action completion reports, etc.; 
  • Field task summaries and technical memoranda;
  • Responses to comments preparation;
  • Scopes of Work for subcontractors; 
  • Proposals for USACE task orders; 
  • Meeting materials, slide decks, and meeting minutes; 
  • field reports and quality control (QC) documentation; and
  • technical memoranda and data deliverables.
  • Support subject matter expert developed content, by reviewing to ensure compliance with required USACE guidance and any applicable UFP-QAPPs or work plans. Coordinate revisions with subject matter experts to improve document readability by revising structure, flow, and technical phrasing while preserving author intent.
  • Support writing teams to verify that tables, figures, references, acronyms and abbreviations, units, and citations are correct and consistent throughout.
  • Serve in the role of independent technical reviewer of content written by other HGL authors, as well as serve in the quality control reviewer role of content developed by other HGL authors. Ensure content reviewed is compliant with HGL standard operating procedure (SOPs), quality system requirements, and project specific requirements. 
  • Serve as a reviewer for field work activities and pre-mobilization planning to troubleshoot and train field teams in common MMRP field tasks.


Document Coordination and Quality Control

  • Manage the editorial process across draft development, subject matter expert reviews, draft final development, applicable responses to comments and final deliverable production. Coordinate deliverable production with the technical service group departments such as word processing and PDF assembly teams.
  • Track versions and comments, consolidate redlines, and ensure resolution of internal and client review feedback.
  • Coordinate closely with Project Managers, Geophysicists, Geologists, Geographic Information System specialists, and other technical staff to keep deliverables moving through the required HGL Review of Project Deliverables standard operating procedure workflow.


Document Control and Delivery

  • Prepare final, controlled deliverables for submittal to USACE, ensuring correctness of format and completeness of required components.
  • Maintain organized document records within SharePoint or other document management systems.
  • Support archiving, retrieval, and lifecycle tracking of project deliverables.

 

 


Minimum Requirements 


WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL 

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communication, Journalism, or related field. 
  • 6+ years of technical editing/technical writing experience, preferably supporting environmental, remediation, engineering, or federal projects. A science background is a plus.
  • Expert-level command of grammar, punctuation, and technical style; able to edit highly technical content with precision.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word (styles, templates, formatting, etc.) and strong working knowledge of Excel.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and deliverables simultaneously.
  • Experience working in collaborative review environments (comment matrices, redlines, formal quality assurance/quality control cycles).

 

 

Desired Qualifications


WHAT YOU NEED TO STAND OUT – Preferred, not required

  • Prior experience supporting USACE or other federal clients, especially under CERCLA, MMRP, or similar remediation programs.
  • Familiarity with environmental project documentation and regulatory/federal deliverable structures.
  • SharePoint document library experience.

Details

 

Work Schedule: HGL office work is dictated by a 5-day work week. Must be able to work 32-35 hours per week, Central Time Zone regular business hours.

Office Type: Remote

Travel: No overnight travel expected.

 

A favorable pre-hire drug test is required.

The annual salary for this position ranges from $79,152.00 - $118,728.00. This position's final salary can be impacted by various factors including, but not limited to, contractual requirements, geographic location, job-related education, training, experience, and skills.
