Job Summary

Supervises the underwriting support staff in the processing of new and renewal insurance policies and maintenance of agent records. This position can supervise individuals who provide underwriting assistance to the underwriting department.

Key Responsibilities

Relying on broad experience and judgment, this role is accountable for accomplishing the following responsibilities and has substantial latitude for actions or decisions made with minimal review.

• Responsible for staff scheduling to include: department workflow, work assignments, employee training, and employee absences.

• Document and communicate performance appraisals and address disciplinary issues.

• Conduct interviews for new or replacement staff and provide new employee training.

• Assist staff to resolve complex or out of policy operational problems.

• Coach and provide career development advice to staff.

• Serve as primary point of contact for department staff with questions pertaining to procedures and processes.

• Monitor department work flow to ensure adherence to company policies, procedures, and quality standards.

• Oversee the input of new, temporary and/or renewal submissions into designated database by Underwriting support staff.

• Review and approve correspondence such as quote letters, memorandums, declinations, or invoices.

• Approve within given authority or recommend approval or denial to higher authority.

• Perform work of Underwriting support staff to meet deadlines or commitments.

• Evaluate, develop, recommend, and implement improvements to current departmental processes and procedures.

• Coordinate with Accounting/Collection personnel on policy cancellations.

• Test controls to determine if they are performing as intended.

People Management

• Has full HR responsibility for direct reports including making hiring decisions, training, coordinating work, establishing standards, reviewing work, conducting performance appraisals, and providing coaching or counseling

Education

4 Year Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, a related field, or the equivalent education and/or experience

Experience

6 Years of relevant and progressive Underwriting experience in specialty or related area that includes a strong working knowledge of state laws

• Possess and have ability to apply broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy

• Exceptional organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

• Knowledgeable of industry changes, legal updates, and technical developments related to applicable area of the Company's business to proactively respond to changing business environment

• Advanced proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office package (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word)

The pay range for this position is $69,500-$126,200 which includes geographic adjustments, where applicable. The pay range is the range THMCC, in good faith, believes is the range of compensation for this role at the time of this posting. The hired applicant will be offered pay within the entire range based on the candidate’s geographic location, qualifications, work experience, education, and/or skill level.
