Protective is seeking a Senior Accountant – Financial Reporting to join a fully remote team. This role is responsible for the preparation, accuracy, and timely delivery of financial statements in compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements across a multi-entity structure.
This position plays a critical leadership role in financial reporting and audit readiness, serving as a key point of contact for external auditors and internal stakeholders. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, audit experience, and the ability to lead complex reporting processes while driving continuous improvement across financial reporting and controls.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee preparation and review of financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements
Lead coordination and execution of external audits, serving as primary point of contact for audit requests
Plan and perform operational and financial audits, developing recommendations based on findings
Research and interpret accounting guidance; develop and enforce accounting policies and procedures
Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and monthly close deliverables
Analyze balance sheet and income statement fluctuations, identifying root causes and trends
Support monthly consolidation of multiple entities and preparation of management reporting packages
Prepare board materials, annual audit reports, and quarterly financial reporting packages
Lead initiatives to enhance reporting processes, controls, and operational efficiency
Support ad hoc analysis, special projects, and cross-functional initiatives
Core Competencies (skills, knowledge and abilities):
Advanced knowledge of US GAAP and/or statutory accounting principles
Strong technical accounting research and interpretation skills
Proven ability to manage audits and maintain audit readiness
Advanced Excel skills (e.g., VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, data analysis)
Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
High attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting
Effective communication skills with ability to interface with auditors and leadership
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
Independent thinker with strong ownership mindset and accountability
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting
Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience
Strong knowledge of US GAAP and/or statutory reporting
Experience supporting or leading external audit processes
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools
Experience reviewing financial statements, journal entries, and reconciliations
Preferred Qualifications:
Public accounting (audit/assurance) experience highly preferred
Active CPA license or progress toward certification
Experience with statutory reporting
Insurance industry experience (life, annuity, or related)
Experience working with multi-entity reporting structures
Experience managing audit-readiness and external audit coordination
The internal title for this role is Sr. Analyst Financial Reporting.
