Supporting the Library of Congress – National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS)

Job Summary:

seeking a qualified Braille and Tactile Embosser to support the production of accessible braille materials for the Library of Congress National Library Service (NLS). The position involves braille transcription, embossing, tactile graphic production, binding, proofreading, and preparation of accessible publications in compliance with Unified English Braille (UEB), Braille Authority of North America (BANA) standards, and NLS Specification 801 requirements.

The selected candidate will support the production of Information Guides, tactile maps, meeting materials, menus, manuals, and other accessibility-focused publications in both English and Spanish formats when required.

Requirements:

The candidate shall have at minimum:

  • Experience performing braille transcription and embossing services using Unified English Braille (UEB)
  • Working knowledge of Braille Authority of North America (BANA) standards and formatting requirements
  • Experience using braille translation software capable of generating .brf files
  • Experience operating braille embossing equipment and producing interpoint braille documents
  • Ability to proofread embossed and electronic braille documents for accuracy and formatting compliance
  • Experience with tactile graphic production, swell paper graphics, or tactile map preparation preferred
  • Ability to bind documents using staple, comb, spiral, or wire binding methods
  • Ability to manage multiple production assignments under strict delivery timelines
  • Strong organizational and quality control skills
  • Ability to communicate professionally with project management and Government representatives
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, PDF files, and PowerPoint documents
  • Ability to handle sensitive or unpublished Government materials responsibly
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior experience supporting accessibility publishing, educational braille production, or government accessibility programs preferred
  • Spanish braille transcription capability is preferred but not required

Duties:

The candidate must:

  • Transcribe English and Spanish source documents into Unified English Braille (UEB)
  • Produce accurate .brf electronic braille files for Government review
  • Emboss braille documents using approved interpoint embossing methods
  • Produce tactile graphics, tactile maps, and swell paper graphics as assigned
  • Proofread all braille materials to ensure 100% accuracy and compliance with NLS standards
  • Burst, collate, assemble, and bind embossed materials using required binding methods
  • Prepare multi-volume braille publications when required
  • Maintain compliance with NLS Specification 801 and applicable BANA formatting requirements
  • Review source materials including Word documents, PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, menus, manuals, and floor plans
  • Package and prepare completed materials for shipment to Government-designated locations
  • Coordinate production schedules to meet required turnaround timelines
  • Maintain organized production records and quality control documentation
  • Report equipment issues, production concerns, or schedule risks to management immediately
  • Support surge production requirements and multiple simultaneous assignments when necessary
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and production accuracy throughout all contract operations
