Capital Power (TSX: CPX) is a growth-oriented North American power producer committed to delivering responsible energy solutions. We develop, acquire, and operate power generation facilities using diverse technologies across Canada and the United States.
We are currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our Business Development – US Thermal team.
The Senior Business Developer – US Thermal is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and executing opportunities to develop or acquire utility-scale thermal power generation assets in the U.S. This individual will lead cross-functional project development and due diligence teams and maintain strong relationships with key market participants to support Capital Power’s strategic growth objectives.
The successful candidate will be a proactive leader with a deep understanding of the U.S. power market, strong commercial and financial acumen, and the ability to manage complex development and acquisition processes.
You will contribute to our team through the following responsibilities:
Project & Business Development
Identify, evaluate, and execute development or acquisition opportunities for thermal power generation assets.
Support origination and development of new business opportunities by analyzing market trends and developing strategies to capitalize on emerging opportunities.
Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams responsible for project development and due diligence efforts.
Market & Stakeholder Engagement
Build and maintain strong relationships with public utilities, load-serving entities, project stakeholders, project developers, OEMs, EPCs, and other market participants.
Represent Capital Power at industry events, conferences, and networking opportunities to foster business relationships and enhance market intelligence.
Investment & Financial Analysis
Assist in preparing investment recommendations and business cases aligned with corporate screening criteria.
Support financial modeling, project valuation, and risk assessments for potential projects.
Work closely with finance and legal teams to evaluate project feasibility and structure commercial agreements.
Contract Negotiation & Execution
Lead and/or participate in negotiations for off-take agreements, joint ventures, lease agreements, project permits, financing documents, and other contractual arrangements.
Support regulatory and permitting efforts to ensure project viability.
Strategic Planning & Budgeting
Contribute to annual business planning, strategic roadmaps, and development budgets.
Provide market insights to inform corporate development strategies and investment decisions.
What you will bring to the role:
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Engineering, Finance, Economics, or related discipline.
MBA or relevant graduate degree is preferred.
Experience:
Combined 5+ years of related experience in business development/project management.
Candidate having experience in energy industry is required.
Minimum 2 years in a related business development role.
Knowledge of energy markets in the US, including, but not limited to, market structures and design, transmission infrastructure and strategic and financial competitors.
Familiarity with ERCOT, PJM, MISO, and other ISO/RTO Markets preferred.
Technically proficient with thermal power generation technologies.
Experience with structuring land leases, land acquisition transactions, and development site acquisitions is desirable.
Experience supporting the development of structured transactions for the development and acquisition of utility-scale power generation assets is highly desirable.
Experience negotiating tolling agreements, PPAs, energy infrastructure investments, etc.
Technical Skills:
Demonstrated quantitative, qualitative analytical and problem-solving skills.
Possess effective oral and written communication skills.
Proficient project management skills as well as the ability to excel in a dynamic and multi-disciplinary project team environment with the ability to adapt to change.
Ability to lead and facilitate effective meetings.
Above average knowledge of legal language and contracts.
Reasonable level of financial analysis skills, including familiarity with accounting principles and financial reporting.
Social Process Skills:
Proven ability to communicate and delegate effectively in a cross-functional environment.

Working Conditions:
Hybrid office/work from home position based in our downtown Phoenix or Washington (DC) locations.
This position requires up to 30% travel.
Additional Details:
The pay range for this position is $110,000 - $170,000.
The specific rate will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and prior relevant experience.
This position is eligible for health care benefits, retirement benefits, paid time off, and annual bonus.
