Job description

About us

Smallpdf was founded in 2013 with one simple belief: working with documents shouldn't be complicated. Today, we're an industry leader in digital document solutions, trusted by millions of users across 195+ countries.

We build intuitive, powerful tools that help individuals and businesses work smarter with their documents. From compressing and converting files to editing and e-signing, our platform makes complex document workflows simple, secure, and accessible.

As a product-led company headquartered in Switzerland and powered by a diverse, global team from 35+ countries, we combine product excellence with a strong focus on user experience, data-driven decision-making, and continuous innovation.

About the role

We're looking for a Senior Data Scientist to help us answer some of the most important questions shaping Smallpdf's growth.

How much value does each marketing channel really generate? What drives users to convert, subscribe, and stay? Where are we missing opportunities to improve our product and business performance?

These questions don't always have straightforward answers, and that's where you come in.

You'll work at the intersection of Data Science, Product and Growth, using advanced analytics, statistical methods, experimentation, and causal inference to uncover what drives our business and what we should do next.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role for someone who enjoys owning complex problems end to end: from understanding the business challenge and working with raw data to building reliable data models, conducting analyses, and turning findings into actionable recommendations.

You'll join our Data team, reporting to the Head of Data and collaborating closely with our Growth and Product leadership. You'll have the autonomy to challenge assumptions, investigate opportunities, and influence decisions that directly impact our business.

We're not looking for someone who simply reports what happened. We're looking for someone who can explain why it happened, what it means and what we should do about it.

What you'll do

  • Drive business-critical investigations. Own complex analytical questions across the user journey, from acquisition and activation to conversion, monetization, and retention. Identify opportunities and translate your findings into clear, actionable recommendations.

  • Uncover what really drives growth. Analyze marketing channel performance, attribution, and incrementality across SEO, paid search, CRM, and emerging channels. Help our teams understand the true impact of their investments and make smarter decisions.

  • Design and analyze experiments. Partner with Product and Growth teams on A/B testing, experiment design, and statistical evaluation. Apply causal inference and quasi-experimental methods when traditional experimentation isn't possible.

  • Build and own reliable data models. Work hands-on with SQL, Python, and data transformation tools to develop, test, document, and maintain production-ready data models. Take ownership of the data foundations behind your analyses rather than relying on others to prepare them.

  • Turn data into decisions. Go beyond dashboards and descriptive reporting to explain performance drivers, challenge assumptions, and recommend concrete actions that improve business outcomes.

  • Proactively identify opportunities. Investigate unexpected changes in traffic, conversion, and customer behavior. Develop analytical frameworks, predictive models, and data products that help teams identify opportunities and act faster.

  • Partner across the business. Work closely with Product Managers, Growth specialists, engineers, and leadership to translate ambiguous business challenges into structured analytical approaches and measurable outcomes.

What we're looking for

  • Strong experience in applied Data Science or advanced analytics, ideally in a SaaS, product-led growth, digital product, or marketing-driven business, with a track record of influencing real business decisions.

  • Advanced SQL and data modeling skills, including experience designing, building, testing, and maintaining reliable data models. Experience with dbt or similar tools is highly relevant.

  • Strong Python skills, with the ability to perform statistical analyses, develop predictive models, and build practical data products.

  • Solid foundations in statistics, experimentation and causal inference, with experience designing and evaluating A/B tests and applying appropriate analytical methods to complex business questions.

  • Experience in Growth or Marketing Analytics, with an understanding of acquisition channels, conversion funnels, attribution, incrementality, and customer behavior. Experience with SEO or paid search analytics is particularly valuable.

  • Strong product and commercial thinking. You understand how metrics connect to business outcomes and can identify which questions are worth investigating.

  • End-to-end ownership. You're comfortable working across the analytical lifecycle, from raw data and modeling to interpretation, communication, and recommendations.

  • Excellent communication skills. You can turn complex analyses into clear, compelling narratives and recommendations that both technical and non-technical stakeholders can act on.

  • Curiosity, initiative and a proactive mindset. You enjoy asking questions, challenging assumptions, and exploring problems beyond the initial request.

What makes you stand out

  • Experience working in a subscription-based or product-led growth business, particularly with conversion, pricing, retention, or customer lifetime value.

  • Hands-on experience with marketing incrementality, attribution modeling, Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM), or quasi-experimental techniques.

  • Experience building analytical frameworks or data products that have been adopted and used by business teams.

  • Experience working in a small, high-impact data team where you've independently owned both the analytical work and the underlying data models.

  • A demonstrated ability to influence Product, Growth, or Marketing strategy through rigorous analysis and clear recommendations.

Why join Smallpdf?

Work on problems that matter. Your analyses will help shape decisions across a global product used by millions of people, with a direct connection to growth and business performance.

Own your work end to end. You'll have the autonomy to investigate meaningful questions, build solutions, and see your recommendations translate into action.

Collaborate with talented people. Join a highly collaborative team and work directly with experienced Data, Product, and Growth leaders who value curiosity, ownership, and thoughtful decision-making.

Make an impact at scale. Combine the opportunities of a globally established product with the agility and ownership of a lean, ambitious team.

Keep learning and growing. We value people who challenge assumptions, experiment, share knowledge, and continuously improve how we work.
