Job description

Xometry (NASDAQ: XMTR) powers the industries of today and tomorrow by connecting the people with big ideas to the manufacturers who can bring them to life. Xometry’s digital marketplace gives manufacturers the critical resources they need to grow their business while also making it easy for buyers at Fortune 1000 companies to tap into global manufacturing capacity.

Lead Sourcing Engineer

We are looking for an experienced and technically strong Lead Sourcing Engineer to guide our sourcing engineering function and act as the technical bridge between customer requirements and manufacturing capabilities. In this role you will own technical evaluation standards, support our most complex and critical projects, and mentor a team of Sourcing Engineers, while working closely with engineering, sourcing, sales, and operations.

How You’ll Contribute

Technical Leadership & Sourcing

  • Lead the technical evaluation of complex parts, assemblies, and projects, and set the standard for how complexity is assessed across the team
  • Lead and standardize DFM (Design for Manufacturing) analysis, including defining DFM checklists and guidelines, and personally handling the most complex or high-risk cases
  • Review drawings, specifications, and project documentation to identify key manufacturing risks, tolerances, materials, and process requirements
  • Guide the sourcing team in selecting suitable manufacturing processes, capabilities, and providers for high-complexity or strategic projects
  • Own the technical tagging framework: define, maintain, and audit tags so that parts and requirements are categorized accurately and consistently

Quotation & Critical Deal Support

  • Act as the final technical reviewer for complex or high-value quotations, checking completeness, accuracy, and alignment with customer requirements
  • Identify technical gaps, risks, and ambiguities early, and drive their resolution with the relevant teams
  • Provide technical input and manufacturing expertise on critical deals, escalations, and strategic customer projects

Client & Provider Communication

  • Lead or join technical meetings with clients and manufacturing providers to clarify requirements, present DFM recommendations, propose alternatives, and resolve technical challenges
  • Present technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including management
  • Ensure alignment between customer expectations, provider capabilities, and the final sourcing solution

Team Leadership & Mentoring

  • Coach, mentor, and develop Sourcing Engineers, including training the team on DFM methods and on machining and sheet metal process knowledge
  • Support onboarding and training of new team members
  • Help prioritize and distribute workload across the team during peak periods
  • Build and maintain a knowledge base of best practices, lessons learned, and technical guidelines

Process Improvement & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with engineering, sourcing, sales, quality, and operations teams to support successful project execution
  • Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies in sourcing and quotation workflows, and lead continuous improvement initiatives
  • Contribute to the evaluation and development of tools, automation, and data used in technical assessment
  • Track and report key team metrics (e.g., quote accuracy, turnaround time, tagging quality) and act on the findings

What You’ll Bring to Xometry

  • Education: Higher technical education in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience: 5+ years in a manufacturing environment working with complex parts or assemblies, including experience in sourcing engineering, technical procurement, or supplier engineering; previous experience mentoring or leading engineers is strongly preferred
  • Hands-on Manufacturing Experience: Proven experience with CNC machines (lathe/turning and milling) and sheet metal forming (cutting, bending, forming, welding), with the ability to judge machine capability, setups, tooling, and cycle-time implications
  • DFM Expertise: Strong experience performing and leading DFM analysis across multiple processes, and communicating design recommendations to customers and providers
  • Technical Knowledge: In-depth understanding of manufacturing processes (CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, casting, injection molding, 3D printing, surface finishing), GD&T, technical drawings, materials, and quality requirements
  • Sourcing Experience: Proven experience working with suppliers, manufacturers, and cross-functional sourcing and engineering teams
  • Leadership: Ability to guide, motivate, and develop technical colleagues, and to make sound decisions on ambiguous or high-risk projects
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; confident in discussing technical requirements with clients, providers, and internal stakeholders
  • English: B2 level or higher
  • Problem Solving: Strong analytical skills and the ability to resolve complex technical and commercial challenges
  • Organization: Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence across engineering, sourcing, sales, and operations
  • Adaptability: Calm under pressure, flexible with changing priorities, and attentive to detail

Nice to Have

  • Experience with ERP/quoting platforms, CAD viewers, or marketplace/on-demand manufacturing models
  • Familiarity with quality standards (ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949) and inspection methods
  • Experience working with data or automation to improve technical evaluation
