Connected Lab Specialist

Job Purpose

The Connected Lab Specialist supports the deployment, configuration, integration and continuous improvement of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and laboratory data management solutions across bp’s R&D laboratories, but with particular focus on setting up the new Bengaluru Technology Centre for Day 1 operations. Working as part of the Lab Automation, LIMS & Data Management team.

The role works closely with laboratory users, digital teams, data specialists, suppliers and project teams to ensure laboratory data is captured, structured, governed and accessible throughout its lifecycle. The analyst supports the implementation of LIMS, master data, workflows, integrations and data standards that improve laboratory efficiency, compliance, data quality and digital enablement.

Key Accountabilities

  • Facilitate requirements gathering activities through workshops, interviews, process mapping, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Engage with scientists, laboratory personnel, and domain experts (SMEs) to understand current laboratory workflows, sample management processes, data requirements, and operational challenges, to translate this into processes and workflows for the new site.
  • Identify and develop use cases for AI Innovation. Support development of reporting and analytics capabilities that improve decision making.
  • Support the definition of project scope, objectives, requirements, and success criteria for LIMS deployment. Document business, process, functional, integration, and reporting requirements using agreed standards and methodologies.
  • Develop and maintain current-state and future-state process maps covering laboratory operations and supporting digital workflows.
  • Analyse information gathered to find opportunities for standardisation, digitisation, process simplification, and operational efficiency.
  • Work closely with the Lab Automation Specialist and the Automation workstream to ensure LIMS, robotics, orchestration platforms, equipment integrations, and laboratory processes are designed and deployed as a connected end-to-end solution.
  • Collaborate with wider team including Data Management specialists, Digital Security, Digital Delivery, system integrators, and vendors to define integrated laboratory workflows and data flows.
  • Support solution configuration, testing, user acceptance testing (UAT), deployment, and operational handover activities. Support user adoption activities to drive successful implementation and sustainable business outcomes.
  • Maintain traceability of requirements, actions, risks, assumptions, and decisions throughout project delivery.
  • Support with the definition of the Data strategy for Downstream R&D and the new Technology Centre. Support implementation of data principles and data management best practices.
  • Work with wider team to understand current data challenges with particular focus on Digital Science and Modelling activities.
  • Support data governance and taxonomy activities to improve data quality, integrity, traceability and compliance.
  • Support integration between LIMS, laboratory instruments, automation platforms, ELN, ERP and other enterprise systems.
  • Assist with testing and validation of data interfaces and workflows, to ensure laboratory data is transferred accurately and reliably between systems.

Essential Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree as a minimum in science, engineering or a related discipline plus 7 years relevant experience.
  • Experience in laboratory operations, business analysis, digital transformation, informatics, or another technical environment.
  • Experience gathering, documenting, and managing business and user requirements.
  • Strong analytical, process mapping, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with stakeholders and facilitating discussions across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Project management experience
  • Experience working with scientific, laboratory or enterprise data.
  • Understanding of data quality, data governance and master data concepts.
  • Knowledge of laboratory data lifecycles and regulatory data requirements.

Desirable Education & Experience

  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), ELN, SDMS, or other laboratory informatics platforms.
  • Understanding of laboratory workflows, sample lifecycle management, testing processes, and scientific data management.
  • Knowledge of laboratory automation, robotics, equipment integration, or orchestration platforms.
  • Experience supporting software implementation, testing, validation, or deployment activities.
  • Familiarity with Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid project delivery approaches.
  • Experience working with technology suppliers, vendors, or system integrators.
  • Experience with laboratory data management platforms, ELN or scientific informatics systems.
  • Knowledge of data governance frameworks and metadata management.
  • Experience with Power BI, SQL, Python or other data analysis tools.
  • Experience supporting AI, analytics or digital transformation initiatives through structured data management.

Travel Requirement:
