Job description

ABOUT RED
RED (Risk, Engineering and Development) SpA was founded in 2012. It offers a wide range of services in the field of natural and human-induced hazard and risk assessment, with a particular focus on earthquake and weather-related perils. RED counts on 20 employees and collaborators with a Master or PhD degree. It is located in the historical city center of Pavia (Italy). RED has recently joined KatRisk, a leading global provider of catastrophe risk solutions, and is now part of a global enterprise with more than 300 employees worldwide. This offers the opportunity to work within a large international organization at the forefront of hazard and risk modeling.

OVERVIEW

RED is looking for a highly motivated Earthquake Hazard and Risk Modeler to join its geo-hazard risk team. The successful candidate will contribute primarily to the development, implementation, and maintenance of seismic hazard models, supporting earthquake catastrophe (CAT) model development pipelines across the world. Depending on the candidate’s background and interests, the role will also include contributions to exposure, vulnerability, and risk modeling, as well as progressive involvement in other activities (such as secondary-perils) carried out by the geo-hazard risk team and the company.

The job is based in Pavia (Italy) with the possibility of remote working.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will perform the following tasks, under the supervision of senior team members:

  • Support the development, implementation, and application of seismic hazard models, including probabilistic and deterministic approaches for earthquake hazard assessment at regional scales.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of earthquake hazard and risk modeling frameworks, including hazard, exposure, and vulnerability components.
  • Support the processing and analysis of seismological, geological, geospatial, and consequence datasets relevant to earthquake hazard and risk assessment.
  • Operate, maintain, and support the improvement of existing hazard and risk models.
  • Contribute to the interpretation and communication of seismic hazard results for scientific, technical, and operational applications.
  • Contribute to reporting, technical documentation, and communication activities (internal and external).
  • Support the activities performed by the geo-hazard risk team.

REQUIREMENTS

  • An academic degree in engineering seismology, earthquake engineering, structural engineering, geophysics, or a related discipline. A PhD degree in earthquake engineering, engineering seismology, or a related field is an advantage.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the field of earthquake engineering or engineering seismology, with particular focus on seismic hazard assessment.
  • Strong understanding of seismic source characterization, ground-motion characterization, and site response modelling.
  • Experience in computer programming in the context of engineering or scientific software development.
  • Strong mathematical skills, with particular focus on probability and statistics.
  • Experience with data management and processing, particularly seismological, geospatial, and consequence datasets.
  • Experience in source-control via Git
  • Good communication skills (written and spoken English).
  • Motivation, attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, with the ability to effectively contribute to joint research and development activities.

NICE TO HAVE

  • Experience or familiarity with earthquake-secondary perils such as landslides, fire-following earthquakes, and tsunamis is an advantage.
  • Experience and familiarity with the OpenQuake engine is an advantage
  • Experience in the use of GIS software (preferably QGIS) is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with consensus earthquake hazard models such as the USGS’s NSHM23 for the United States and ESHM20 for Europe is an advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of the insurance industry is an advantage.
