Job Description Summary
The Engineering Leader – Grid Integration is a key member of the Grid and Electrical Subsystem team within the Wind Engineering organization, responsible for leading and providing technical direction to a team of engineers and modeling experts focused on the definition, design, validation, and optimization of wind turbine grid performance. Serving as the primary technical authority for grid integration, this leader ensures products meet global grid code requirements, regulatory standards, and customer interconnection needs while driving technical excellence across new product introduction (NPI) programs. The role collaborates across converter design, firmware, controls, and mechanical engineering disciplines to advance innovative solutions, including grid-forming converter technologies and hybrid energy storage integration. Combining strong people leadership with strategic technical oversight, the Engineering Leader also represents the organization’s grid integration capabilities with customers, regulators, utilities, and other industry stakeholders.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Lead a team of engineers and grid modelling experts, providing day-to-day direction, setting priorities, and fostering a culture of technical excellence and collaboration.
- Own the turbine-level grid performance strategy throughout the New Product Introduction (NPI) process, including requirements flow-down, Design Memo 1 (DM1) documentation, and system-level design reviews.
- Act as the primary interface for grid integration across converter design, firmware teams, and multidisciplinary system integration teams, facilitating design trade-offs to ensure optimized turbine performance.
- Author and own the Grid Interconnection Document (GID), ensuring it serves as a robust, high-quality technical deliverable for customers and grid regulators.
- Lead the development, maintenance, and validation of turbine-level grid models (PSCAD, PSS/E, DIgSILENT/PowerFactory), ensuring model quality and accuracy for fleet-wide applications.
- Define grid testing needs and support execution, ensuring that our hardware and software meet the rigorous demands of global grid operators.
- Drive new technology development projects, specifically focusing on advanced grid-forming converters and hybrid storage integration.
- Own and maintain turbine-level grid certifications, ensuring all products remain compliant with evolving international standards.
- Develop engineering talent, coach team members, and attract new talent to maintain a high-performing and sustainable team capability.
- Drive continuous improvement in modelling tools, simulation methodologies, and internal design processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Power Systems, or a related STEM discipline, from an accredited institution, along with a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience.
- 5 years experience in renewables grid integration, power systems modelling, or electrical subsystem design.
- 3 years leading engineering projects, technical teams, or functional engineering organizations.
Desired Characteristics
- Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems.
- Proficiency with grid simulation tools such as PSCAD, PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, or MATLAB/Simulink.
- Demonstrated experience leading the design and integration of grid-forming converters or hybrid energy storage systems.
- Strong understanding of grid codes, interconnection requirements, and power system stability.
- Strong understanding of Wind Turbine NPI processes, converter hardware/firmware, and multidisciplinary system integration.
- Experience interfacing with external grid regulators, utility customers, and certification bodies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of simplifying complex technical topics for non-expert stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional technical decisions and drive consensus in a matrixed environment.
- Track record of improving engineering design processes, simulation rigor, or documentation quality.
US Eligibility Requirements
- The preferred work location for this role is at the GVH Headquarters in Greenville, SC but highly qualified remote candidates will be considered.
