Description of Work
This position serves as a neutral and independent technical resource for small businesses navigating regulatory, permitting, and compliance challenges. This position also fulfills the Small Business Environmental Assistance Program requirements under Section 507 of the Clean Air Act by providing engineering expertise and environmental technical assistance to small businesses subject to Clean Air Act regulations.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service
The Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service (DEACS) leads NCDEQ’s non-regulatory and technical assistance efforts. Through its non-regulatory technical services, DEACS is dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing North Carolina's environment and economy. We achieve this through customer-focused assistance, promoting a greater understanding of environmental permitting and compliance, encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices, increasing recycling, reducing waste disposal, and minimizing the impact of resource consumption. DEACS is the primary state agency responsible for pollution prevention strategies and waste reduction. Our mission is to deliver high-quality customer service and technical assistance, focusing on problem-solving and education. This role is situated within the Environmental Assistance Section of DEACS, which oversees the DEQ Environmental Stewardship Initiative (ESI), manages the DEQ toll-free hotline, handles DEQ SEPA responses, provides DEQ permitting assistance and guidance, offers small business assistance for DEQ's Clean Air Act, and provides operations and administrative support in the seven DEQ regional offices. This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification:
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
