The Opportunity

The Senior Voice Operations Engineer will operate, maintain, and modernize the infrastructure behind Lumistry Voice. Our distributed fleet includes approximately 8,000 Linux systems, split roughly evenly between cloud-hosted virtual servers and single-board computers deployed in pharmacies. Most support LAMP applications, Asterisk, FreePBX, phone provisioning, and related telecommunications services.

This is a senior individual-contributor role for someone with deep, hands-on expertise in both Linux fleet operations and low-level SIP and Asterisk technologies.

What You’ll Own

  • Operate, secure, patch, and maintain approximately 8,000 Linux systems and the LAMP and voice services running on them.
  • Manage phone provisioning templates, configuration generation, firmware, certificates, and remote deployments across multiple phone models.
  • Support carrier-grade SIP infrastructure, including trunks, session border controllers, DIDs, routing, failover, E911, STIR/SHAKEN, caller ID, and carrier escalations.
  • Automate fleet management, configuration, deployments, and recovery using scripting, configuration-management tools, APIs, Git, and CI/CD.
  • Improve monitoring, alerting, runbooks, incident response, and root-cause analysis while eliminating recurring problems.
  • Plan and execute safe, staged deployments and maintenance with clear validation and rollback procedures.
  • Troubleshoot Asterisk, FreePBX, SIP, SDP, RTP, registrations, routing, transfers, IVRs, queues, voicemail, DTMF, NAT, and audio issues using logs, packet captures, and command-line tools.
  • Collaborate with Voice Engineering, Platform Services, Customer Operations, Support, Product, and external telecommunications partners.

What You Bring

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field or equivalent experience.
  • Senior-level Linux administration and troubleshooting experience across a large or highly distributed production fleet.
  • Deep production experience with Asterisk, FreePBX, SIP, RTP, SDP, and IP telephony, including the ability to read raw SIP messages, packet captures, dialplans, and end-to-end call flows.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, DHCP, NAT, routing, firewalls, VLANs, TLS, certificates, and Linux networking.
  • Experience managing enterprise SIP phones, provisioning templates, firmware, carrier trunks, number routing, and telecommunications escalations.
  • Strong Bash, Python, or comparable scripting skills, with experience using Git and configuration-management tooling.
  • Sound production judgment, clear communication, strong documentation habits, and a collaborative, team-first approach.
  • A customer-focused, driven, curious, and accountable mindset.

This position requires significant depth in both Linux and VoIP. Expertise in only one will not be sufficient.

Preferred

  • Yealink or similar enterprise phone provisioning.
  • Kamailio, OpenSIPS, FreeSWITCH, SIP proxies, or session border controllers.
  • Puppet or similar fleet-management tooling, package repositories, and modern observability platforms.
  • Experience modernizing legacy Linux, LAMP, Asterisk, or FreePBX environments.
  • Healthcare, pharmacy, HIPAA, or another security- and privacy-sensitive environment.

Other Information About This Job

  • This is a full-time individual-contributor position based remotely in the United States.
  • There is no standing on-call rotation. Occasional after-hours work will be required for planned deployments and maintenance windows.
  • The role offers the opportunity to establish technical standards and guide fleet modernization through expertise and influence.

Compensation

The approximate range for this position is $120,000 - $130,000, depending on experience and skills.

Benefits
