About the Role

The Associate Director, Business Development is responsible for developing and executing business sales strategy across assigned therapeutic areas or customer segments with personal sales responsibility (AUD$8-12M/year). This role focuses on advanced consultative selling, complex stakeholder management, and developing comprehensive segment strategies that position Emerald as a preferred CRO partner.

Responsibilities

· Strategic Business Development – Develop and execute business sales strategy for assigned therapeutic area or customer segment; Build and manage portfolio of sales target at AUD$8-12M/year in actively developing opportunities; Identify strategic growth initiatives and market expansion opportunities

· Client Engagement & Account Strategy – Serve as strategic business advisor to key sponsors and stakeholders; Develop account strategies that identify and capitalize on growth opportunities; Manage complex negotiations and C-level sponsor relationships

· Proposal Development & Deal Closure – Lead development of major proposals and RFP responses for strategic opportunities; Coordinate cross-functional teams to deliver competitive proposals; Close complex deals with significant contract values

· Market Research & Strategic Intelligence – Monitor therapeutic area trends, funding patterns, and competitive dynamics; Conduct strategic analysis and provide insights to inform company positioning; Share competitive intelligence and market trends with leadership

· Team Leadership & Development – Lead and mentor a team of 1-3 BD professionals on business development strategy, sales techniques, and career development; Collaborate with team members achieve collective sales target and personal growth; Model consultative selling, strategic thinking, and ethical business practices

· CRM & Reporting – Maintain comprehensive and accurate CRM data for all opportunities and account activity; Provide monthly strategic sales reports to BD leadership with pipeline analysis and forecast

· Industry Events & Strategic Networking – Attend and actively lead participation in industry conferences and strategic networking events; Build and maintain strong relationships with key decision-makers and thought leaders

· Cross-Functional Collaboration – Partner with clinical, operational, marketing, and regional leadership on strategic initiatives; Ensure all commitments and proposals are aligned with company capability and strategy

About You

· Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Business, or related field

· MBA or advanced degree (MSc, PhD) strongly preferred

· 6-8 years of professional experience in sales, business development, or related field

· 4-6 years of experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, CRO, or clinical research industry; 2+ years of leadership experience managing BD professionals

Competency

· Advanced consultative selling and complex stakeholder management capabilities

· Strong strategic thinking and business acumen

· Excellent leadership, coaching, and team development skills

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to influence at C-level

· Proficiency with Salesforce CRM and sales analytics; Technological proficiency including Microsoft Office packages

· Ability to see the big picture, yet still focus on detail and quality of work

· Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities and ambiguous environments
