We are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced Mechanical Design Engineers with strong expertise in CAD, engineering drawings, GD&T, design for manufacturing, material selection, and production-ready technical documentation to contribute to an advanced engineering and AI evaluation project.
Selected professionals will create and review manufacturable mechanical designs, develop detailed 2D and 3D CAD models, apply professional drafting and tolerancing standards, and evaluate technical documentation for clarity and production readiness. The opportunity is particularly suited to engineers with substantial experience taking mechanical parts from concept through manufacturing. No prior AI experience is required.
Key Responsibilities
CAD Modelling & Mechanical Design
- Create detailed 2D and 3D mechanical models for manufacturing applications
- Work with SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Inventor, Creo, NX, or comparable CAD platforms
- Interpret and reference models using FreeCAD where required
- Translate complex mechanical requirements into clear CAD specifications
- Maintain accuracy and precision throughout design-development workflows
Engineering Drawings & GD&T
- Create professional engineering drawings suitable for manufacturing
- Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing principles accurately
- Define dimensions, tolerances, datums, and manufacturing requirements clearly
- Interpret technical drawings and identify incomplete or ambiguous specifications
- Apply appropriate drafting standards across mechanical documentation
Design for Manufacturing & Production
- Evaluate mechanical parts for practical manufacturability
- Apply DFM principles to improve production feasibility and efficiency
- Consider manufacturing-process constraints during design development
- Recommend design changes that improve reliability, cost, or ease of production
- Support transition of parts from engineering concept to real-world manufacturing
Materials & Manufacturing Analysis
- Apply knowledge of manufacturing processes when evaluating component designs
- Select appropriate materials based on mechanical and production requirements
- Assess how material properties influence geometry, tolerances, and fabrication methods
- Identify design decisions that may create production or assembly challenges
- Incorporate practical manufacturing judgement into technical recommendations
Documentation, Review & Engineering Feedback
- Document design intent, manufacturing processes, and engineering decisions clearly
- Review and critique existing drawings, CAD models, and technical documentation
- Identify opportunities to improve clarity, precision, and manufacturability
- Provide constructive written and verbal feedback on engineering deliverables
- Collaborate remotely with project contributors while maintaining professional quality standards
Ideal Profile
- Extensive professional experience in mechanical design and product development
- Demonstrated experience taking mechanical parts from concept through manufacturing
- Expert-level proficiency with one or more professional CAD platforms
- Experience across SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Inventor, Creo, or NX is highly valuable
- Practical familiarity with FreeCAD for model interpretation or reference
- Strong knowledge of engineering drawing interpretation
- Advanced understanding of GD&T and dimensional tolerancing
- Strong command of drafting standards and manufacturing documentation
- Deep understanding of design for manufacturing principles
- Knowledge of multiple manufacturing processes and their design implications
- Strong material-selection judgement
- Experience producing manufacturing-ready technical documentation
- Strong problem-solving and critical-review capabilities
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to precision
- Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills
- Experience collaborating remotely on engineering projects is advantageous
- No prior AI-training or model-evaluation experience is required
Engagement Details
- Independent contractor engagement
- Fully remote
- Compensation: $40–$80/hour
- Work will involve CAD modelling, engineering drawing development, GD&T, DFM, manufacturing analysis, and technical documentation
- Assignments may use SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Inventor, Creo, NX, FreeCAD, or related engineering tools
- Strong hands-on mechanical design and manufacturing experience is central to this engagement
- Contributors may be asked to review, critique, and improve existing engineering materials
- Clear written and verbal explanation of design decisions will be required
- Project scope, CAD workflows, manufacturing scenarios, and technical standards may evolve depending on project needs
- Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, engineering organisation, manufacturer, institution, or other third party
