Pencil ✏️

Book Publishing

Pencil uses AI to make ads. We want to become the default way ads get made, because AI ads are 2x faster and cheaper to make, and 2x better performing than making them without AI. We’re called Pencil because we believe AI will be a tool for creative people, not a replacement - it may even be as fundamental a tool in the future as the pencil was in the past. Pencil was founded in 2018 with a team from Google, Facebook and Uber with backing from Sequoia and Entrepreneur First. We were acquired by The Brandtech Group in 2023 to pursue a shared vision of bringing GenAI to the Fortune 500.

Job description

At Pencil, we are driving innovation in advertising technology through our state-of-the-art SaaS product, which harnesses Generative AI to redefine content creation. Our mission is to make AI the default in advertising without replacing creative people. To achieve this, we need to make sure that our technology isn’t just in the hands of big brands - we need to try to help small businesses and creative individuals too.

Every great ad starts with a brief, and in most teams the brief is still where things go wrong: scattered documents, missing context, endless back-and-forth. As a Product Designer for Brief mode, you'll own how briefs are created, understood and brought to life inside Pencil. You'll design the experience from the first upload through AI analysis, collaborative editing, review and approval, all the way to the moment a brief turn into the finished creative. You'll work where agentic AI meets real creative workflows, shaping how people and agents work together: when the AI suggests, when it acts, and how users stay in control. Your work will help a global brand team and a two-person agency brief with the same clarity and confidence.

Key responsibilities:

  • Own the end-to-end Brief mode experience

  • Design agentic and AI-assisted interactions and journeys prototyping fast (Figma/ AI tools) and writing clear, build-ready handovers

  • Work closely with Product, Engineering and AI teams from discovery to delivery, Run user research and usability testing, and use product analytics and session replays to find friction and back design decisions with evidence

  • Help evolve and maintain Pencil's design system with reusable patterns that hold up for enterprise brands and self-serve users alike

Your background:

  • 5+ years of product design experience on B2B SaaS or complex workflow tools, with a portfolio showing end-to-end ownership of shipped features

  • Hands-on experience designing AI-powered products: generative, conversational or agentic interfaces, including uncertainty, loading and error states

  • Strong interaction and systems thinking: multi-step flows, permissions, statuses and edge cases, all brought together in a coherent experience

  • Fluency in Figma and rapid prototyping; comfort with AI prototyping tools or front-end basics (React, component libraries) is a strong plus

  • Experience using qualitative research and quantitative data (e.g. Amplitude) to shape and validate decisions

  • Bonus: experience in adtech, marketing, creative operations or agency workflows

You’ll Thrive Here If You…

  • Are curious about where AI is going and excited, not threatened, by designing for the creative people it's meant to empower

  • Move fast and iterate: you'd rather put a prototype in front of users this week than polish a deck for a month

  • Take ownership: you spot problems beyond your brief, speak up and see them through

  • Communicate directly and collaborate openly, and give and take candid feedback with engineers, PMs and customers

  • Care about craft and outcomes equally, and hold the details to a high standard without losing sight of the impact

  • Frame unclear problems and question assumptions. Solve the real problem, not just the symptoms.

KPIs & Success Measures

  • Have 5 clients actively use the entire briefing flow by the end of 2026

  • Adoption of briefs: % increase of briefs submitted per active workspace.

  • Adoption of approvals: % of deliverables that reach a final approval decision.

  • Adoption of agents: % of briefs where a Brief Mode agent is initiated.

Benefits:

  • 25 days PTO plus public holidays, although we operate a Flexible Time Off scheme

  • Health insurance / private medical cover

  • Monthly stipend towards wellness, fitness, and learning and development

  • Remote - work from anywhere in your home country

  • Enhanced parental leave policies, whether you become a parent through birth, adoption or surrogacy

  • Access to our Pencil office in The Shard, London for UK employees

  • Flexible working hours
