Principal Software Engineer/Developer

Job Description:

Position Description: 

Architects microservices and web platforms using modern backend and frontend frameworks, with logging, observability, and build automation. Designs client‑side applications with current web technologies and testing frameworks. Applies established engineering practices for architecture consistency, continuous integration and delivery, code quality, and Agile processes to support reliable system delivery. Uses business knowledge to translate the vision for divisional initiatives into business solutions by developing complex or multiple software applications and conducting studies of alternatives. Analyzes and recommends changes in project development policies, procedures, standards, and strategies to development experts and management.  

Primary Responsibilities: 

• Participates in architecture design teams. 

• Defines and implements application level architecture. 

• Develops applications on complex projects, components, and subsystems for the division. 

• Recommends development testing tools and methodologies and reviews and validates test plans. 

• Responsible for QA readiness of software deliverables. 

• Develops comprehensive documentation for multiple applications or subsystems. 

• Establishes full project life cycle plans for complex projects across multiple platforms. 

• Responsible for meeting project goals on-time and on-budget. 

• Advises on risk assessment and risk management strategies for projects. 

• Plans and coordinates project schedules and assignments for multiple projects. 

• Acts as a primary liaison for business units to resolve various project/technology issues. 

• Provides technology solutions to daily issues and technical evaluation estimates on technology initiatives. 

• Advises senior management on technical strategy. 

• Mentors junior team members. 

• Performs independent and complex technical and functional analysis for multiple projects supporting several divisional initiatives.  

• Develops original and creative technical solutions to on-going development efforts. 

Education and Experience: 

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a closely related field (or foreign education equivalent) and five (5) years of experience as a Principal Software Engineer/Developer (or closely related occupation) building and maintaining Web applications using Angular, JavaScript, and RESTful Web services in a financial or technology services domain supporting student debt repayment programs.  

Or, alternatively, Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a closely related field (or foreign education equivalent) and three (3) years of experience as a Principal Software Engineer/Developer (or closely related occupation) building and maintaining Web applications using Angular, JavaScript, and RESTful Web services in a financial or technology services domain supporting student debt repayment programs. 

Skills and Knowledge: 

Candidate must also possess: 

• Demonstrated Expertise (“DE”) designing, developing, testing, implementing, and maintaining secure, distributed, low‑latency, and scalable web and client/server applications in the financial services industry supporting student debt repayment programs, using Java and J2EE technologies (Spring, Spring Boot, Servlets, and JSP), Angular, JavaScript, HTML, Node.js, RESTful web services, Apache Camel, Apache Kafka, and Tomcat.   

• DE applying web security technologies (OAuth and SAML), Agile methodologies, and unit testing frameworks (JUnit, Jasmine, and Karma) in the software development and testing; gathering and analyzing functional requirements and translating them into technical designs; developing algorithms and business process flowcharts using Microsoft Visio and Confluence; and creating Splunk dashboards to deliver data metrics, analytics, and product usage insights for business stakeholders.  

• DE performing release management and providing production support for business‑critical distributed applications, including building and maintaining Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, automating build, test, and deployment processes using Jenkins, Azure DevOps, AWS, Maven, uDeploy, Stash, Artifactory; monitoring system performance using Splunk, and Datadog; and debugging code and analyzing logs using Eclipse and Visual Studio.  

• DE analyzing, designing, developing, testing, and implementing complex client/server and distributed applications using Java/J2EE, SQL, Spring, Apache Kafka, JavaScript, and Angular, including optimizing application performance, scalability, and reliability within containerized environments and Kubernetes clusters.

Fidelity is transitioning to a full-time onsite working model through a phased rollout across regions and roles. Currently, some roles and locations require 100% onsite presence, while others require less. Onsite expectations are likely to evolve as the rollout continues.
