Job description

Pocket FM is the world's largest audio-series platform, where powerful stories travel effortlessly across languages, cultures, and continents. From India and the US to Europe and beyond, we're redefining how stories are created, discovered, and experienced across the globe.

With one of the largest creator ecosystems in entertainment, Pocket FM is home to millions of listeners and an ever-growing catalog of original serialized content. We're building the future of storytelling by bringing together exceptional writers, creators, and creative leaders to develop stories audiences can't stop listening to.

About the Role

Pocket FM is seeking a Creative Director to join our Japan Marketing team in a fully remote role based in Japan. This position requires professional fluency in both Japanese and English, as you will create marketing content for Japanese audiences while partnering closely with global teams across Marketing, Creative, Production, Product, and Performance Marketing.

This is a storytelling-first creative leadership role. Unlike traditional marketing roles focused on short-form advertising, Pocket FM's marketing assets are 30–50 minutes long, requiring the same narrative craft found in television, film, anime, audio drama, and serialized fiction. We're looking for someone with a professional screenwriting background who understands how to sustain audience engagement through strong hooks, character development, emotional escalation, pacing, dialogue, and cliffhangers.

As the Creative Director, you'll lead the creative vision, writing, localization, and optimization of promotional campaigns for the Japanese market. You'll manage writers, editors, and creative collaborators while remaining deeply hands-on in developing scripts, story structures, messaging, and creative direction that keep audiences engaged from beginning to end and inspire them to discover the full series.

This is an ideal opportunity for a creative leader with experience in television, film, anime, audio fiction, gaming, publishing, advertising, or digital media who loves storytelling and wants to shape how millions of people discover their next favorite story.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the creative vision and storytelling strategy for user acquisition campaigns across the Japanese market.

  • Write, shape, and direct long-form promotional content ranging from 30–50 minutes, applying screenwriting principles including character development, pacing, emotional escalation, dialogue, and cliffhangers.

  • Develop compelling concepts, scripts, messaging, and creative frameworks that capture attention and drive audience engagement.

  • Build testing roadmaps exploring new hooks, openings, characters, story structures, emotional beats, cliffhangers, and creative concepts to continuously improve campaign performance.

  • Adapt and localize successful global campaigns while ensuring they feel culturally authentic and emotionally resonant for Japanese audiences.

  • Oversee the end-to-end creative localization process, including copy adaptation, dubbing, editing, creative review, and final asset delivery.

  • Establish and maintain exceptional creative standards across storytelling, writing quality, pacing, visual execution, and technical production.

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of promo writers, video editors, and creative collaborators to consistently deliver outstanding work.

  • Partner closely with Performance Marketing to evaluate campaign performance and rapidly iterate creative concepts based on audience insights.

  • Analyze campaign performance metrics, including customer acquisition cost, conversion rates, engagement, retention, watch time, and audience drop-off, to identify opportunities for creative optimization.

  • Translate performance insights into stronger storytelling, messaging, and creative execution that scales across campaigns.

  • Support hiring, coaching, and development of creative talent while fostering a culture of experimentation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Marketing, Production, Product, Localization, and Global Creative teams to deliver campaigns that support business growth.

Qualifications
  • Professional screenwriting experience for television, film, anime, audio fiction, serialized fiction, or other long-form narrative entertainment is required.

  • Professional fluency in both Japanese and English, with the ability to collaborate across international teams while creating native-quality creative for Japanese audiences.

  • Exceptional storytelling, writing, and conceptual thinking skills with the ability to develop emotionally engaging, performance-driven creative.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop compelling long-form narratives with strong openings, character-driven storytelling, emotional progression, conflict escalation, and satisfying narrative payoffs.

  • Experience as a Creative Director, Associate Creative Director, Senior Copywriter, Screenwriter, Advertising Creative, Content Creative, or similar creative leadership role.

  • Experience leading writers, editors, creative studios, or multidisciplinary creative teams.

  • Strong understanding of digital advertising, creative testing, and user acquisition marketing.

  • Experience writing or directing promotional content across video, social media, digital advertising, television, film, gaming, publishing, or entertainment.

  • Ability to combine creative intuition with data-driven decision making to continuously improve campaign performance.

  • Experience localizing creative content for Japanese audiences with strong cultural awareness and language quality.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and project management skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple creative projects, stakeholders, and production timelines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience in entertainment, gaming, streaming, publishing, audio, web fiction, advertising, or creator platforms is highly preferred.

  • Passion for storytelling, creative experimentation, and building marketing campaigns that inspire audiences to discover new stories.
