Engineering Team Lead (Java / React) | Remote LATAM

What we’re looking for

The Engineering Team Lead is a player-coach who splits time approximately 50% writing production code and 50% on planning, technical direction, and team development. This role leads a small fullstack engineering team within a distributed SaaS environment, shipping features end-to-end across backend and frontend systems.

AI-native development is a core expectation, not a differentiator. The right candidate uses AI tools daily, has a clear point of view on what works and what doesn’t, and can pilot and standardize these practices across the team with measurable outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and ship fullstack features end-to-end: services and APIs in Java, data schema in PostgreSQL, and UI in React.
• Lead technical design for distributed systems (microservices, event-driven architectures with Kafka or similar): write design docs and evaluate tradeoffs.
• Modernize legacy code and lead monolith-to-microservices migrations.
• Use AI coding tools daily and back your opinions with concrete examples.
• Pilot and standardize AI and agentic workflows (code, review, QA, docs) with clear guardrails and measurable results.
• Raise the quality bar through code reviews, pairing, and your own PRs.
• Coach engineers with clear expectations, direct feedback, and 1:1s.
• Run planning, prioritization, and estimation against the roadmap, turning ambiguous requirements into clear plans.
• Improve CI/CD (Docker), testing (JUnit, Playwright, Cypress), and observability practices on Azure, AWS, or GCP.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional engineering experience, including 3+ years leading delivery as a team lead or tech lead .

• Strong fullstack capability: deep on one side, real working competence on the other. Backend: Java + PostgreSQL; Frontend: React.

• Strong system design skills: distributed systems, REST APIs, event-driven architectures, microservices, and data-intensive applications.

• Production operational experience: Docker, CI/CD, and observability.

• AI-native workflow: active daily use of AI coding tools; able to explain what you use, what you stopped using, and why, with examples.

• Test automation experience with JUnit, Playwright, or Cypress.

• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred; AWS or GCP acceptable).

• Experience working in Agile, cross-functional teams.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to represent technical decisions clearly across teams.

• English Level: Fluent (C1/C2) is mandatory.

Preferred

• Familiarity with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Redis).

• Kubernetes experience is an advantage.
