Intern, Production - Marketplace:

Think of an original story about the economy you want to hear.  Now think of a place where you can produce that story in an accessible and conversational way and reach more than 12 million weekly listeners.

We are that place.  Come join an innovative and creative staff of journalists at Marketplace.

Marketplace is one of the most dynamic multimedia brands in the country, known for an irreverent approach to business and economic news on multiple platforms. We're looking for a journalism intern who is innately curious about raising the economic intelligence of our audience; driven to find new and compelling ways to tell stories both on the radio and on digital platforms; organized and detail-oriented; willing to experiment; and able to pitch ideas and thrive in a quick paced, dynamic environment.

As the Production Intern at Marketplace, you will help us deliver our content to stations; to help them serve our audience. You will also work specifically on local content initiatives, including self-narrated series that draw from listeners across every state in the US and several local markets that do not have media outlets.

Key Learning Goals:

The goal of this internship is to provide you with immersive learning and real-world experience through impactful work. By the end of your internship, you will be able to:

  • Learn how to work in a multichannel newsroom with different deadlines across the platform
  • Learn to work on varied pieces for online, on-air, and social platforms.
  • Learn how to source new sources often invisible to national media outlets
  • Learn how to prepare those sources for national interviews

Overall goal is to provide firsthand experience so you can transition for any production job in public radio, podcasting or on digital.

Responsibilities:

In this fast-paced position, you will:

  • Identify new sources to expand our reach and relevance
  • Write and deliver all local station content (including promotion materials)
  • Cultivate regular interviews to build trust and engagement from our audience
  • Prep and produce host interviews and first person audio essays

Benefits:

  • Eligible to accrue sick time off
  • Eligible for health insurance as required under the ACA
  • Eligible to participate in the APMG retirement plan

Programming:

  • Participate in a robust onboarding experience
  • Professional development: on-the-job training, workforce readiness training, formal performance review feedback sessions, etc.
  • Participate in brown bag sessions to gain broader perspective of the organization

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university, or graduated within the past 18 months
  • Available full-time (40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.) throughout the internship
  • Experience with Adobe Audition or similar digital audio software
  • Experience with digital editing for interviews and tape selection
  • Experience with writing for radio or for online platforms
  • Experience working with a team to create daily content (college newspaper, radio or internship in journalism)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on an editorial team with deadline experience
  • Must have the ability to multitask across several areas, including writing, cutting audio, researching, and filing on-air and online copy
  • Must have strong organizational and communication skills
  • Self-starter with an appetite for learning radio
