Job description

Job Description Summary

Power Train Dynamics and Diagnostics (PTDD) is a global team which is responsible for vibration aspects of the entire scope of Gas Power rotating equipment, including Gas Turbines, Steam Turbines, Generators, and interfacing systems. With a commitment to a complete product lifecycle, PTDD drives a successful integration of rotating and stationary components in a power train shaft-line (NPI, ITO, OTR) together with a technical leadership to support data driven and physics-based resolution of vibration field issues (RCA, ER, NCR).

As a Senior Engineer on the PTDD team, you will directly support our customers by resolving issues (ER, RCA) for vibration, power train dynamics, and operability issues affecting rotating components (Gas Turbine, Steam Turbine, Generators). You will drive process rigor, mentor engineers, and drive both data- and model-based solutions, bridging customers, field insights, and design team capabilities to deliver durable, fleet-wide reliability improvements.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead and own complex RCAs with significant customer-specific or fleet-wide impact, owning the end-to-end process from problem definition and data acquisition through root cause validation and CAPA implementation in a timely manner
  • Drive cross-functional problem-solving and corrective action related activities across interfacing organizations including product line, service shops, manufacturing, sourcing, field teams, and design engineering to ensure aligned and effective resolution, mitigating risk and improving product robustness
  • Communicate issue resolution progress, technical findings, risk assessments, and corrective actions across all organizational levels, from field engineers to executive leadership both internally and externally
  • Define investigation strategies, guiding hypothesis development, validating analytical and field evidence, and mentoring engineers in best-practices for both ER and RCA workstreams
  • Author and maintain high-quality technical documentation—including Design Practices, Standard Work, and Lessons Learned—to drive continuous improvement and institutionalize knowledge

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics or related STEM field from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or controls related capacity

Desired Characteristics

  • Proven experience leading structured problem-solving approaches for complex mechanical and system issues with cross-functional teams, including problem definition, data validation, hypothesis testing, root cause identification, and CAPA development
  • Mastery of RCA methodologies and tools (8D, Mind Mapping, Gantt, etc.)
  • Significant experience with troubleshooting and investigations of rotating machinery and power train systems, including gas turbines, steam turbines, generator, load gearboxes, pumps/motors
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate with others to solve complex issues across teams
  • Proven ability to interact and work effectively with all levels within the organization with excellent communication skills for technical issues and solutions
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly with direct customer interaction experience
  • Ability to document, plan, market, and execute programs with established project management skills, including planning prioritization and execution of multi-threaded RCA investigations
  • Experience with vibration data collection, DAQ systems (preferably ADRE 408), instrumentation, and testing techniques for rotating component and structural vibration diagnostics
  • Experience with numerical methods, basic finite element, and rotordynamic calculations (unbalance response, power train alignment, critical speeds)
