Why This Role Matters:

Group 1001 is seeking a strategic and hands-on Director, Reinsurance Accounting to lead our reinsurance financial operations, oversee the end-to-end accounting of complex reinsurance structures, and ensure compliance with statutory and internal reporting requirements. This role will lead a team responsible for accurate and timely accounting, analysis, and reporting of reinsurance treaties, including XOL, quota share, facultative, and retrocession agreements. This leadership position is critical to driving process improvements, internal controls, and collaboration across finance, actuarial, legal, underwriting, and third-party reinsurers.  This role will ultimately report to the Chief Accounting Officer.

How You'll Contribute:

  • Lead and manage the reinsurance accounting team responsible for treaty administration, premium/claims accounting, settlements, and recoverables.
  • Oversee the accounting and financial reporting for all reinsurance arrangements (XOL, quota share, facultative, stop loss, retrocession).
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of ceded premiums, loss recoveries, commissions, reinstatement premiums, and premium adjustments.
  • Own the month-end and quarter-end close processes related to reinsurance; reconcile reinsurance-related general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare or oversee Schedule F and related statutory and GAAP reporting.
  • Partner with actuarial, underwriting, and legal teams to interpret and implement treaty terms into accounting operations.
  • Review and approve complex reinsurance calculations and financial schedules.
  • Lead internal and external audits related to reinsurance activities and ensure proper documentation and control procedures.
  • Manage relationships with reinsurance brokers, reinsurers, and third-party administrators.
  • Implement process improvements and automation initiatives for increased efficiency and control.
  • Stay current with regulatory developments and ensure compliance with accounting standards (e.g., ASC 944, SSAP 62R).

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in reinsurance accounting or insurance finance, with at least 3+ years in a leadership role.
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP and statutory accounting principles as they apply to reinsurance.
  • Experience working with property & casualty reinsurance programs.
  • Prior experience preparing Schedule F and NAIC regulatory filings.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills; ability to mentor, coach, and develop a team.
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities.
  • Strong project management and process improvement orientation.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and influence at multiple levels of the organization.
