About the team and the role:

At eBay, we build and operate trusted, large-scale platforms that power global commerce. The Traffic team is responsible for helping keep those platforms fast, available, and secure by designing and operating systems that manage traffic flow, routing, and service connectivity across distributed environments. The team partners closely with SRE, platform, and application engineering teams and works on infrastructure challenges that directly influence platform reliability and performance.

As a Traffic Engineer, you will help design, build, and operate traffic management and routing systems that improve availability, latency, scalability, and network security. This role is suited for an engineer who is comfortable working on modern infrastructure, including Kubernetes-based environments, and who enjoys solving systems and networking problems at scale.

What you will accomplish:

  • Build and improve services and tools that manage traffic flow and routing across distributed systems.

  • Help strengthen platform security by implementing secure service communication patterns, routing controls, and hardening measures.

  • Support scalable service operation in Kubernetes environments through deployment, troubleshooting, and ongoing reliability improvements.

  • Contribute to low-latency, high-throughput system design through profiling, benchmarking, and performance tuning.

  • Use logs, metrics, and traces to investigate production issues, identify root causes, and improve operational stability.

  • Partner with SRE, platform, and application teams to integrate traffic and networking solutions that are reliable, maintainable, and safe.

What you will bring:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience plus 2+ years of relevant experience in traffic engineering, networking, infrastructure, or platform engineering.

  • Programming experience in Java, C++, or Go, including debugging, data structures, and core concurrency concepts.

  • Understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, DNS, load balancing, and TLS.

  • Working knowledge of Linux and distributed systems fundamentals.

  • Experience with or exposure to Kubernetes, Docker, and service-to-service networking.

  • Familiarity with technologies such as Envoy, NGINX, or HAProxy, and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or OpenTelemetry is a plus.
