Background

The Project Management Team at CLEAR Global handles a wide range of exciting projects, including language services, voice data collection, research, and technology initiatives. 

One of the projects is the Language Technologies for Crisis Response (LT4CR) initiative, aiming to bridge the gap in language technology for under-resourced languages in crisis-prone regions.

Objectives

The main objective of this internship is to support the coordination of linguistic tasks in our translation management environment, as part of the LT4CR project. This with the specific goal of corpus creation - creating a collection of text and questions in up to 5 languages that voice contributors will either respond to freely (spontaneous speech prompts) or read aloud (read speech prompts) to create the voice datasets that help train voice technologies in low-resource languages for crisis response use cases.

The role 

The MIIS Project Management Intern - Corpus Creation will support with coordinating collaboration among different stakeholders, ensuring engagement, appropriate levels of expected output quality, and turnaround. They will also assist with internal processes necessary for the effective planning, coordination, and compliance of activities.

Responsibilities

  • Manage specific linguistic projects as assigned by Project Officers; 
  • Upload and download project files, run pre- and post-production checks; 
  • Track project progress and delivery, keep project trackers up-to-date, and provide regular status updates to Project Officers; 
  • Maintain an organized project environment across platforms, maintaining project records, files and databases as assigned; 
  • Assist with building and managing linguist teams, as well as general linguist recruitment, as requested by Project Officers; 
  • Maintain effective communication with project team members and linguists throughout the project, ensuring that linguists remain engaged throughout the project and have a clear understanding of project expectations;
  • Carry out linguist communications around translation quality and turnaround, replying to their messages, ensuring task pick-up, flagging issues, etc; 
  • Handle other project management tasks as assigned; 
  • Act in the best interest of the organization during the project period.

Qualifications 

  • Current graduate student at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS)
  • Excellent command of English. Knowledge of other languages is an advantage;
  • Previous experience in translation and/or interpreting (internships and volunteering are considered valid experiences) is desirable; 
  • Previous experience working with non-profit organizations is desirable;
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment
  • Strong writing skills in English; 
  • Knowledge of CAT tools is a plus.
