Job description

Location: Lisbon, Portugal — hybrid (CET alignment required)

About the role

We are looking for a Junior Elasticsearch & Observability Engineer to join a team responsible for the observability platform of a large-scale, multi-platform environment spanning Mainframe, Open Systems and Container platforms. You will support and maintain the Elastic Stack and help onboard application teams onto the platform, working under the guidance of senior engineers. This is a hands-on role for someone at the start of their career who wants to build deep technical expertise in observability.

What you'll do

  • Support, maintain and help extend Elastic Stack components (Beats, Elastic Agents, Logstash, Elasticsearch, Kibana)

  • Execute runbooks and predefined procedures for platform health monitoring, routine maintenance and alert verification across non-production and production environments

  • Support application teams during onboarding onto the observability platform

  • Configure basic monitoring, dashboards, log collection and alerting

  • Take part in routine release execution and incident handling alongside senior team members

  • Follow established coding standards, governance and CI/CD practices

  • Document operational activities, changes and ticket resolutions accurately

  • Communicate progress clearly within the team and with stakeholders

What you'll need

  • University degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a comparable technical field (or equivalent initial experience)

  • 0–2 years of hands-on experience or familiarity with IT environments, logging and monitoring concepts

  • Understanding of core observability concepts — logs, metrics, traces and golden signals (mandatory)

  • Foundational Linux and/or Windows knowledge: basic commands, file systems and core metrics (CPU, memory, storage)

  • Exposure to, or a genuine willingness to learn, the Elastic Stack and OpenTelemetry

  • Basic knowledge of Git and CI/CD pipeline concepts

  • Professional English at C1 level, spoken and written (mandatory)

Nice to have

  • Basic understanding of Docker, Kubernetes and REST APIs

  • Awareness of IT security principles (authentication, access management)

  • Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, ServiceNow and MS Office

  • Exposure to Agile delivery and ITIL / incident management

  • French and/or Dutch

Legal requirement: you must hold a valid work permit or EU/Schengen nationality to work legally in Portugal.
