Overview

We have an existing opening for a Programmer Analyst to join our team! Candidates that reside in Edmonton or the Greater Toronto Area are preferred, however candidates anywhere in Canada will be considered (Flexible Remote Work Arrangements) The Programmer Analyst works in a team environment to build, enhance and maintain software systems that support our business divisions and clients. The Programmer Analyst interacts directly with users to determine and refine requirements and works both alone and in teams to deliver solutions to those requirements in alignment with best practices.  Development of new systems and features, coupled with on-going maintenance of existing systems provides the Programmer Analyst with end-to-end visibility and responsibility through the entire application lifecycle.

Organizational Alignment:

  • Operational effectiveness and efficiency: work closely with IT Managers, IT peers, and Operational staff
  • Staff Supervision: none
  • Customer Service:  deliver prompt and professional responses to user requests, communicate effectively to ensure solutions deliver tightly against the business need
  • Quality:  ensure coding, testing, operational and documentation best practices are adhered to
  • Relationships:  build strong relationships with internal IT teams as well as business users. Provide guidance to junior team members on advanced techniques and assist them with problem solving and software design.

Key Performance Factors:

  • Execute assigned tasks effectively and in a timely manner
  • Follow best practices (coding, testing, documentation, deployment)
  • Communicate status of tasks to IT and business management clearly and frequently
  • Document Work Orders with implementation and testing details

Job Responsibilities:

Business Systems Analysis (AID020) - 15%

  • Work with end users to determine and document application requirements
  • Suggest technical solutions to business problems/opportunities
  • Develop and execute test plans to ensure solutions deliver tightly against stated business requirements

Application Development (AID010) - 85%

  • Implement discovered requirements, whether through existing application interface or via custom enhancements
  • Coordinate and execute data migration/integration initiatives
  • Collaborate with other programmers within a team environment
  • Manage timelines and expectations by effectively prioritizing tasks and keeping open lines of communication with business stakeholders
  • Participate in peer code review sessions
  • Prepare code for production deployment
  • Follow programming best practices
  • Document design and implementation details of new systems and features
  • Keep abreast of new development tools and techniques

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum grade 12 education, with preference given to individuals with post-secondary degree/diploma in Computer Science or a related discipline
  • 4+ years of experience in an Application Development Role
  • Consistently demonstrating competency in all job responsibilities associated with Programmer Analyst I role
  • .NET Framework (VB/C#)
  • .NET Web Services (WebAPI)
  • HTML, JavaScript, jQuery
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Git
  • Insurance industry experience is an asset
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to discuss software requirements with business users using non-technical language
  • Analytical thinker
  • Ability to multi-task and handle a high volume of concurrent tasks
  • Ability to learn new business and technical concepts
  • Works collaboratively with others inside and outside the IT team to achieve goals
