The Opportunity

The Legal & Advisory Services (L&A) Internship is an immersive, skills-based program within the financial services industry designed to provide law students with meaningful legal experience working alongside experienced in-house corporate counsel.

L&A advises USAA’s lines of business and leadership across banking, property and casualty insurance, life insurance, privacy, cyber, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, and government relations. The internship offers structured learning through work assignments, coaching, and exposure to various practice areas, focusing on developing competencies in legal research, corporate legal writing, communication, professionalism, and applying legal knowledge to insurance and banking matters.

The opportunity may lead to selection into the L&A Legal Fellowship Program — a two‑year, full‑time development opportunity following successful completion and performance in the internship, graduation, and passing the bar exam. Fellows will be eligible to apply for open full‑time roles after 18 months in the program; if a fellow has not secured a role by the 24‑month mark, they will be placed into an available full‑time role based on business needs and availability.

The internship is based at USAA Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, TX.

What you'll do:

Responsible for providing legal counsel to assigned clients within USAA. Analyzes legal issues of a routine and moderately complex nature and communicating legal advice. Engages with business clients to better understand USAA’s strategic and operational objectives. Collaborates with internal partners within business units and the Chief Legal Office. Acquires general knowledge regarding relevant business, industry, and area of legal specialty.

  • Provides legal counsel to support business objectives and mitigate regulatory, compliance and litigation risk to USAA.
  • Leads routine to moderately sophisticated legal assignments and delivers appropriate solutions.
  • Effectively communicates with internal partners in both verbal and written forms.
  • Monitors and analyzes changes in laws, regulations and industry and advises organizational leadership of such changes as appropriate.
  • Supports senior attorneys with legal questions or issues by using general knowledge and conducting research.
  • Ensures critical issue of matters communicating more significant risk to more senior attorneys.
  • If awaiting bar licensure, all legal advice and assignments will be provided by and completed under the supervision of a licensed attorney.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you need to have:

To qualify, you must be pursuing a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, and plan to graduate after the final day of the internship. Most of our interns participate in the summer between their junior and senior years. Our 2027 internship will start on June 2, 2027, and last through August 13, 2027.

Compensation: The salary for this position is: $40 per hour. Interns will receive an intern stipend to assist with expenses.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
