350.org

Civic & Social Organizations

350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. Our online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are led from the bottom up by thousands of volunteer organizers in over 188 countries. 350.org works hard to organize in a new way—everywhere at once, using online tools to facilitate strategic offline action. We want to be a laboratory for the best ways to strengthen the climate movement and catalyze transformation around the world. 350.org is a growing global organization incorporated and based in the United States, with staff currently working in 23 countries around the globe. 350.org is on a rapid growth trajectory, having grown our budget 400% since we incorporated in 2011. We seek ever more opportunities to galvanize the public to respond to the threat of climate change. This is due to two factors: scientific evidence of the threat of the problem and severity of impacts, and the success we have had in mobilization, creative communications, and organizing. Looking to the future, we believe aggressive political action on climate change can happen, but creating the political space for that change will push us to work more creatively, smartly, and quickly than ever before. Our organisation is comprised of energetic, passionate, and disciplined change-makers. We are known for our sophisticated use of technology and our distributed organizing, mass mobilization, and connections to other social movements. We love Skype emoticons, customized Spotify playlists, open-office formats with newspaper clippings on the walls, and marching in the streets.

About 350.org

350’s mission is to keep carbon in our atmosphere to a safe level, below 350 parts per million. We do this by mobilizing ordinary people to campaign for universal access to clean energy and an end to fossil fuels. The values that guide and drive our work are listed here. 350.org is an equal opportunity employer. 350.org strives to be an inclusive and collaborative group of people who bring a variety of approaches to the work we do. We’re committed to the principles of justice, and we try to build a safe workplace where everyone is treated fairly and enjoys working together. We do our best to make staff positions accessible to all potential team members, regardless of race, national origin, ethnicity, age, disability, assigned gender, gender expression or identity, sexual orientation or identity, religion or creed, veteran status, marital or parental status, and genetic information. We also strive to include team members in communities most impacted by climate change or impacted by other kinds of environmental, social, and economic injustice.

About the Senior Award Officer

The Senior Award Officer will lead the effective management of 350.org’s global portfolio of restricted institutional grants across the full post-award lifecycle, from award set-up through implementation, reporting, amendments, and closeout.

Serving as the primary organizational focal point for restricted grants management, the Senior Award Officer will work across Program, Country, Finance and Institutional Fundraising teams to translate grant commitments into clear internal requirements, monitor performance and expenditure, identify and address risks early, and ensure high-quality reporting is delivered on time.

The Senior Award Officer will also strengthen 350.org’s grants management practices and work with teams to capture and distill program results, accomplishments and learning that can inform donor reporting, renewals and future fundraising.

Responsibilities

  • Manage 350.org’s global portfolio of restricted institutional grants from award through implementation, reporting and closeout, maintaining clear oversight of grant requirements, deliverables, budgets, timelines and responsibilities.
  • Translate approved proposals, budgets and grant agreements into clear internal requirements and work with Program and Country teams to monitor progress against grant commitments.
  • Proactively identify implementation, financial, reporting or compliance risks, work with relevant teams to address issues, and escalate significant concerns to the Sr. Manager, Institutional Fundraising and other appropriate stakeholders.
  • Lead the preparation of high-quality narrative grant reports, gathering and synthesizing inputs from relevant teams.
  • Partner with the Global Finance Manager and Finance team on corresponding financial reporting.
  • Work with the Finance team to monitor expenditure against restricted grant budgets, identify material variances, and ensure alignment between financial performance, program implementation and grant commitments.
  • Manage post-award changes, including grant amendments, budget revisions, extensions and changes to deliverables, in collaboration with relevant Program, Finance and Institutional Fundraising colleagues.
  • Support the final development and review of particularly complex restricted proposals, budgets and grant agreements to identify implementation, reporting or compliance considerations before commitments are finalized.
  • Develop and continuously improve grants management processes, tools, templates and systems, and ensure grant information is accurate and up to date in Salesforce and other relevant platforms.
  • Work with Program and Country teams to capture and distill significant accomplishments, results, evidence and learning from grant implementation, maintaining accessible information that can strengthen donor reporting, renewals and future fundraising.
  • Ensure grants are appropriately closed out, including completion of final reporting and other donor requirements and capture of relevant learning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in institutional grants management, awards management, program management or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex six- to eight-figure institutional awards through implementation, reporting, and closeout.
  • Experience managing grants involving multiple teams, countries, partners or workstreams.
  • Strong experience preparing high-quality narrative reports for institutional funders and working with grant budgets and financial information.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple grants, priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify risks, exercise sound judgment and determine when escalation is required.
  • Strong relationship-management and cross-functional working skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and accountability across teams without direct supervisory authority.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to synthesize complex program information clearly and effectively.
  • Experience working with CRM, grants management or related information-management systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a distributed international organization across countries, cultures, functions, and time zones.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Desired (but not required) skills and experiences

  • Experience working within an international nonprofit, advocacy or movement-building organization.
  • Experience developing or improving grants management systems, processes or tools.
  • Experience supporting knowledge management, organizational learning or evidence capture and applying learning to donor engagement or fundraising.
  • Familiarity with climate justice, environmental justice, social justice or other progressive movements.
