Junior Mortgage Underwriter

We are seeking a detail-oriented Junior Mortgage Underwriter to join our growing team. This role is ideal for a mortgage professional with 3–5+ years of loan processing experience who is ready to take the next step in their career and transition into underwriting.

As a Junior Underwriter, you will review loan files, analyze borrower financials, and evaluate risk to ensure loans meet investor and agency guidelines. You will work closely with processors, loan officers, and operations teams to help move loans efficiently from application to closing. This position is a great opportunity for someone who has strong processing experience and wants to develop their underwriting skills in a supportive, fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze residential mortgage loan files to determine borrower eligibility and creditworthiness
  • Evaluate income, assets, credit, collateral, and documentation to ensure compliance with lending guidelines
  • Apply agency and investor guidelines, including conventional, FHA, VA, and other mortgage programs
  • Communicate underwriting conditions clearly to processors and operations teams
  • Review updated documentation and clear conditions for final approval
  • Identify potential risk factors and escalate complex scenarios when appropriate
  • Maintain quality, accuracy, and turnaround time standards
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure a smooth loan process and excellent borrower experience

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of mortgage loan processing experience required
  • Strong understanding of mortgage documentation, including income calculation, credit analysis, and asset verification
  • Familiarity with agency guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA) preferred
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple loan files and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with mortgage LOS systems and underwriting tools preferred
