Lead Architect / Project Manager

About the Project:

Project: Scalable Renovate Solution for GitLab
Responsibilities:

Define and design the target architecture of the Renovate solution

Design a scalable operating model capable of supporting tens of thousands of GitLab repositories

Architect self-hosted Renovate, distributed workers/runners, job scheduling and caching

Design solutions for GitLab API and external registry rate-limit handling

Develop an automated repository discovery and onboarding approach

Define and maintain central, version-controlled Renovate configurations and shared presets

Establish update strategies, grouping rules, time windows and auto-merge policies

Ensure security and compliance requirements, including secure credential management and least-privilege access

Define and implement prioritisation of security-relevant and CVE-driven updates

Establish monitoring, logging, dashboards and operational KPIs

Plan and coordinate the rollout: pilot → rollout waves → full coverage

Own project planning, roadmap, prioritisation and rollout management

Coordinate stakeholders across GitLab platform operations, Security, development teams and management

Perform technical reviews of the implementation and make key architectural decisions

Coach and support engineers throughout the implementation

Contribute to documentation, guidelines and developer enablement/training

Work hands-on on prototypes and critical technical implementation questions

Requirements:

Several years of experience as a Solution Architect, Lead Architect or Senior DevOps Engineer

Strong experience with GitLab, preferably in large-scale environments

Practical experience with Renovate or a comparable automated dependency management solution

Strong DevOps and CI/CD background

Experience designing scalable, distributed and highly automated solutions

Solid understanding of infrastructure and platform architecture

Experience with APIs, authentication, credential management and security best practices

Experience with monitoring, logging and observability

Proven project management and stakeholder management skills

Ability to operate effectively as both a technical lead and project manager

Hands-on and solution-oriented mindset

Fluent English

Nice to Have:

Enterprise-level experience with Renovate

Kubernetes and containerisation experience

Cloud infrastructure experience

Experience delivering large-scale rollout or migration projects involving a high number of repositories
