Financial Services

Living mutual has always been at the core of our human existence, and it's the principle that's guided us since our founding in 1851. It's not a concept we invented, but one we champion for the simple reason that people take it for granted today. While the world would have us strive for independence, the truth is when we depend on one another, we aren't just more secure - life is happier and more fulfilling. So as we celebrate our new identity, we're reminding everyone that who we are stays the same. Job description

The Opportunity:

This role is designed for an experienced Individual Disability Income (DI) Underwriter who understands the value of sound judgment, decision‑making authority, and meaningful work. You’ll underwrite complex DI cases end‑to‑end, partnering closely with the field while maintaining the independence required to make quality, sound decisions. The work is fast‑paced, varied, and rooted in strong underwriting fundamentals—balanced with real autonomy and trust in your expertise.

The Team:

MassMutual is going through a digital transformation while continuing to be a leading customer-centric company. The team is composed of underwriters supporting our MassMutual Financial Advisors (MMFA) distribution channel. We support MassMutual career agents, individual brokers and the consumers they serve. The team culture is collaborative, cross-functional, and uses old and new technologies combined with great work/life balance.

The Impact

  • Serve as a product and underwriting subject matter expert through field training, industry events, conferences, and ongoing partner education.

  • Deliver competitive underwriting decisions that prioritize business placement while maintaining profitability and morbidity expectations.

  • Provide exceptional service and consultation to agents, brokers, field office staff, and business partners on underwriting and risk related matters.

  • Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and effectively to support customer understanding and business outcomes.

  • Apply strong underwriting expertise to assess risks, gather relevant information, and make sound decisions, even in complex or ambiguous situations.

  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders through effective communication, collaboration, and emotional intelligence.

  • Drive continuous improvement by influencing process enhancements, championing change, and supporting operational excellence.

  • Mentor and coach less experienced underwriters while providing technical guidance on complex underwriting and customer service issues.

The Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • 5+ years of underwriting individual disability insurance.

  • $15K+ approval authority in individual disability insurance underwriting.

The Ideal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 7+ years of underwriting individual disability insurance

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment

  • Approval limits of $20K+ IDI, $50K+ BOE, $750K+ Buy Sell without a second signature

  • Exams completed toward industry designations i.e., DIA/DIF, AALU/FALU, FMLI, etc.

What You Can Expect at MassMutual :
